Specs only say the unit is 14" not the extended length.

The rod will extend appx. 10" outside of its' housing.

Who ever answered this question does not understand the question. How can the rod extend 14" if the whole unit is 14"? The rod would fall out!!

While you could mount it to the underside of the shelf, doing this would affect the warranty of the product, as it is meant to be installed in the holes of one of the Martha Stewart Closets vertical panels.

What is the length of the mounting piece. What is the minimum shelving unit depth that it can be mounted on?

This is meant to be mounted to one of the Martha Stewart Closet product vertical panels. The rod, once installed, will slide out appx. 10" from its housing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very useful Installed three in our walk-in. We use them almost daily for temporary storage . Seems to be able to hold a lot of weight even at full extension. I have IKEA units, so holes do not match up between frame box and rod plate, but plate comes with screws as well as bolt to secure. Very pleased.
