Do you have to use the floor track or can you mount with just the upper track?

Asked by: Flyerfoot
No you don't have to use a floor track. Since my door was wide I felt better using one.

Is the door the same on both sides? Can a married be mounted on the back of door?
Asked by: Cindy
Cindy, Yes, you can mount a mirror on the back side of the door, if the thickness of the mirror is not so great that it drags on the wall. The door is solid enough to hold most fasteners. If you used the backer board at the top to mount the top rail, you will have approximately 1-1/2" gap from the door to the wall. If the doorway has trim around it, then you will have approximately 1" gap from the door to the wall. There are a lot mirrors that are thinner than 1". I have included a picture showing the gap. My door has trim around it, so it has a 1" gap. As other have said, both sides are identical. The warranty on the door will NOT be voided if you drill into it.

Can I install the backing board with drywall anchors? I do not have the ability to install the rail assembly or backing board to into studs in any way.
Asked by: KevinM
I agree with the answers that were given. I didn't have studs where they were supposed to be so that is why I drilled my own holes in the bar in order to attach them to the wooden studs. Some people attached a wooden board the length of the bar which helped with the attachment. They painted the wooden board the same color as the wall so you don't notice it so much. Don't attach it to the dry wall with anchors, its not strong enough.

Want to use this door on a bathroom. Would you recommend that? How sound proof is it? What is the best way to lock it?
Asked by: CZ26
If you purchase the door a few inches past your opening it will provide you with the privacy that you are looking for. There is also hardware that you can purchase that is really nice but you have to do a little work to put the hardware in. (worth the privacy lock if you want that. Very nice hardware) There is also hardware for the inside of the doors as well. It was a little expensive so I had someone cut down a piece of metal for me and bent the edge over a half inch and I made it as long as my handle that I put on the outside part of the door. I also used hardware for kitchen cabinets so I can use the screw from one side to the other. (of course I bought a screw a little longer so it would connect both pieces of hardware.) Really sorry for the long answer but I did a lot of research on these types of doors before I purchased my stuff. I also ordered my hardware to hang the door from another company in Michigan because I didn't have the standard size wall studs. It varied so much so I had to order the steel bar in the length that I wanted and had to pre-drill holes for the stop bars and also in order to hang the bar. I wanted to make sure it was sturdy and screwed into a stud. I do have the bottom hardware that came with my door hardware but again I didn't use it. I didn't have anyone to route a line on the bottom of the door to have it ride on the guide so I had someone bend a piece of metal like a square "U" but with one side only 2 inches high. The bottom of the "U" was approximately 1/8 of an inch off the floor. I attached it to the molding and made it wide enough to have the door glide through it. I also purchased stick on foam pieces and lined the metal inside with the foam so if the door hit it, it would stay quiet and also put a piece of white foam over the part that went on the molding over the screws. I painted the outside metal the same exact color of the door so you don't even notice it. I wish there was a store that could make anything you want. These small pieces to finish your door are very important. I didn't have the extra money (they do make them and they are beautiful) so I had to improvise and it came out great. I tried to upload pictures but it won't let me. I had very helpful people at Home Depot which gave me additional ideas.

36 in. x 84 in. Melrose Solid Core Primed Composite Interior Barn Door Slab with Sliding Door Hardware Kit is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 63.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed Anchor system is made of plastic. It has a lot of give and the door sags. Door had damage done to it through box. During shipping there was a chip out of the door and had to be covered with caulk and then painted. The door stoppers also only mount in areas that are inconvenient and they don't install securely. The board that goes between the rail and the wall was extremely warped and crooked. All of these issues made what should have been a 30 minute install into 3 hours. I had a carpenter install it and he has installed over 20 barn style doors and he said this was the lowest quality door he has seen. Do not buy this door!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Inexpensive Alternative to Reclaimed Wood This product is awesome! If you're looking for the barn door look, you know by now by the time you add up the cost of the door plus the hardware you are looking at $1,000. We remodeled our garage into a guest house with a loft/studio feel and wanted to do the project on a budget. A barn door to the bathroom was a must, and we lucked out finding this item at HD which gives you both the hardware and the door (primed and ready to paint) for 1/3 of the cost of the alternatives. It looks and functions great, the only drawback is there is no hardware for the inside/other side of the door but that's an easy fix.

The door is simple to install, even for those with average skills. The door (primed off-white/ cream), railing and rollers (brushed stainless) are of excellent quality and finish (5*). The reason for less than 5* is: the handle (if you use it) is poorly finished - you'll need a better quality one from HD; as others have said, the pre-drilled holes for the rollers are out of alignment and too far apart; two holes with thread are drilled in each end of the rail for joining rails I presume - would be nice if there were plugs to hide these holes if they're not used; the method of affixing to dry wall is not what any builder would recommend because the bolts retaining the rail (17" apart) do not align with to code stud centers - you'll be relying on the drywall to take the weight and good luck with that! These issues are easily fixed. Fix the backing board to studs with 3" screws (that you supply), then fix the rail to the backing board with supplied bolts - don't use the supplied plugs - that way the studs and backing board are taking the weight directly, not the drywall. The roller pre-drilled holes on top of the door, forget them, move the rollers 3/4" toward the leading and following edges of the door then drill your own holes to properly affix the rollers. The handle, well I threw the supplied one away and instead used 6" rectangular recessed sliding door handles in stainless steel (amazon) so there is a handle on each side, and the door can open fully beyond the doorway cavity. Finished job is excellent.

The anchors that came with the door were not the right fit, we had to buy separate achors to hold up the door, otherwise the door won't be secure. Also the bar at the top comes with the holes and it did not match where the frame of the door was, therefore a separate piece needed to be purchased. It only brings one handle!!! So, you are trapped on the side without a handle. So, while the door is beautiful, it has a lot of flaws. Unless, you are a master craftman, it may not be the door for you. Definitely not an easy install. Requires work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality at an affordable price... The door packaging was excellent no damages. I spray painted the door using Pro Classic paint. The installation was easy. One suggestion is to check if your floors (where the door will be gliding) are level. There is a formula where you add a constant plus the door. In my case I use 87 11/16 (this is to the top of the white board) so I could have enough height to add the railing guide. I didn't use the handle that came in the package because I wanted to use the same handles used in the bathroom cabinets. The handle holes are not pre-drill so you can use whatever handle you want. The only complain is that the pre-drill holes on top of the door are not perfectly aligned but its not a big deal.

It was 6 inches wider than we wanted . Spoke with Bill at HD PTC and he says yes even the 36 in wide doors are actually 6 inches wider than the box says. Does anyone know this and it doesn't say it on the package! This is a big difference since you need to find the 6 inches more to recover the door in its open position. Also door only comes with 1 handle for the outside and it needs FLUSH mounted handle for its inside control. We must and buy one on line.

Nice door, easy installation, but what they don't show on the website is that you have to use a white board (included) to install the track onto. It shows up in some of the photos that users have posted, but it is not shown in the product photos. It is paintable, so you can match it to the wall, but I wish I had known about that piece before I bought and unpacked the door. I've had barn-style doors before that didn't require this board for installation.

We had it installed as part of a larger master bedroom and bathroom renovation. It is a heavy solid door and prevents sound and light from the bathroom disturbing someone sleeping in the master bedroom. If you are switching to this from a hinged door you will need to rebuild the doorway to fit the exact door size and look good. Otherwise you will end up with too much space between the frame and the door. Alternately you could get a wider door: 36" for a 30" door replacement. Think about this in your planning because it caught me by surprise. Luckily I have an excellent builder who made the doorway look as good as the door! One thing that I would suggest to the manufacturer is to include a recessed door pull for the inside of the door. I bought this one from Home Depot: Baldwin 3.121 in.
