Customer Questions & Answers

Do you have to use the floor track or can you mount with just the upper track?

Asked by: Flyerfoot
To clarify my earlier answers, there is no bottom track. There is only a small guide that you cannot see once the door is installed. As someone else wrote, you must use this to prevent the door from swinging from the upper track. Again, once it is installed you will have to look real hard at the very bottom of the door to see it.

Is the door the same on both sides? Can a married be mounted on the back of door?
Asked by: Cindy
Hello Cindy, Yes, both sides of the door have the design, however, I would not recommend mounting anything that will require drilling into the door (besides standard hardware like handle set and necessary barn door components) as it will void the warranty on the door.

Can I install the backing board with drywall anchors? I do not have the ability to install the rail assembly or backing board to into studs in any way.
Asked by: KevinM
Hello KevinM, That is not something we would recommend. The ledgerboard must be fastened to studs with wood screws in order to ensure a proper connection. Drywall anchors alone will not support the weight of your door and the track.

Want to use this door on a bathroom. Would you recommend that? How sound proof is it? What is the best way to lock it?
Asked by: CZ26
Hello, I would not recommend a barn door for this application. While the door itself does provide some sound attenuation, in a barn door application, the door does not form a tight seal over the opening, and may provide less privacy than you may wish for. The only way to lock it would be with a hook and eye or a latch mechanism in the lock block, but either of those devices may interfere with the door's movement.

The door is simple to install, even for those with average skills. The door (primed off-white/ cream), railing and rollers (brushed stainless) are of excellent quality and finish (5*). The reason for less than 5* is: the handle (if you use it) is poorly finished - you'll need a better quality one from HD; as others have said, the pre-drilled holes for the rollers are out of alignment and too far apart; two holes with thread are drilled in each end of the rail for joining rails I presume - would be nice if there were plugs to hide these holes if they're not used; the method of affixing to dry wall is not what any builder would recommend because the bolts retaining the rail (17" apart) do not align with to code stud centers - you'll be relying on the drywall to take the weight and good luck with that! These issues are easily fixed. Fix the backing board to studs with 3" screws (that you supply), then fix the rail to the backing board with supplied bolts - don't use the supplied plugs - that way the studs and backing board are taking the weight directly, not the drywall. The roller pre-drilled holes on top of the door, forget them, move the rollers 3/4" toward the leading and following edges of the door then drill your own holes to properly affix the rollers. The handle, well I threw the supplied one away and instead used 6" rectangular recessed sliding door handles in stainless steel (amazon) so there is a handle on each side, and the door can open fully beyond the doorway cavity. Finished job is excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Inexpensive Alternative to Reclaimed Wood This product is awesome! If you're looking for the barn door look, you know by now by the time you add up the cost of the door plus the hardware you are looking at $1,000. We remodeled our garage into a guest house with a loft/studio feel and wanted to do the project on a budget. A barn door to the bathroom was a must, and we lucked out finding this item at HD which gives you both the hardware and the door (primed and ready to paint) for 1/3 of the cost of the alternatives. It looks and functions great, the only drawback is there is no hardware for the inside/other side of the door but that's an easy fix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks great... great price This door is a great option when/if you don't want to spend 2x to 3x the price! I installed this product as the door into my Master Bathroom - as there was no door before, just an opening. (Awkward!) I was able to install this door by myself over the course of a weekend... and would like to offer a few notes on installation: 1) The recommended drill bit for the pilot holes in the ledger/backer board is WAY TOO BIG. The installation instructions call for a 5/16 bit... but this results in a hole that is outsized for the actual bolts used to mount the track to the ledger board. I drilled the pilot holes with the prescribed bit size, and ended up having to patch those holes, and drill much smaller pilot holes about 1 inch over. (It ended up working out fine - and the patched holes are barely visible - but it was annoying.) 2) The recommended drill bit for the pilot holes to attach the rolling hardware to the door is WAY TOO SMALL. Again, not a big deal, but annoying. 3) When you attach the door stoppers to the track, it is likely one may need to be on the *outside* of the first bolt hole on the track (install instructions say to install both on the inside of the first bolt hole). Measure first to determine if you need to place a stopper inside or outside the bolt. (I initially placed both inside, then had to unbolt the track attachment on one side to move one of the stoppers). 4) I didn't like the included handle... it is easy enough to upgrade to something else... which I did. 5) This door is super heavy... I installed it by myself, but it would have been helpful to have assistance when attaching to door to the track. 6) SPEND TIME MAKING/TAKING ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS. I found the measurements provided with the installation instructions (on how high to hang the track) to be accurate. I followed those instructions specifically, and was pleased with the result. 7) You will be painting this door. The primer color is a bit dingy. But, the door takes paint really well, and this shouldn't be an issue. All in all, a great product... and I would recommend it highly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product-bad instructions! The instructions included with this product are both misleading and total junk. The installer must have good skills or a successful outcome will not happen. The drill sizes noted don't work well with the sheet rock anchors included. If you purchase this unit, use the included backing material as the base to lag screw the door hanger assembly after you have securely attached it, (the backing material), with 3 inch sheet rock screws to the available studs in your wall. It would have been better to not include the instructions and to advise the installer to make sure to hang the door securely, as it is very heavy. The over all look of the product is good and is very solid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product. This is my first on-line purchase with in-store pick up and I was informed immediately of it's availability for pick up. Much easier than looking for it in the store. The product is of excellent quality and design. The instructions were fairly easy to follow. I was able to assemble the product by myself but, i would recommend to have a helper to transport the door slab.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality at an affordable price... The door packaging was excellent no damages. I spray painted the door using Pro Classic paint. The installation was easy. One suggestion is to check if your floors (where the door will be gliding) are level. There is a formula where you add a constant plus the door. In my case I use 87 11/16 (this is to the top of the white board) so I could have enough height to add the railing guide. I didn't use the handle that came in the package because I wanted to use the same handles used in the bathroom cabinets. The handle holes are not pre-drill so you can use whatever handle you want. The only complain is that the pre-drill holes on top of the door are not perfectly aligned but its not a big deal.

It was 6 inches wider than we wanted . Spoke with Bill at HD PTC and he says yes even the 36 in wide doors are actually 6 inches wider than the box says. Does anyone know this and it doesn't say it on the package! This is a big difference since you need to find the 6 inches more to recover the door in its open position. Also door only comes with 1 handle for the outside and it needs FLUSH mounted handle for its inside control. We must and buy one on line.

The doors themselves are fine. The hardware is heavy duty. Opened the 30 inch door everything looks good. One team takes 30 inch to install another team the 36 to another part of the house. When I return 30 minutes later, the 36 inch door has completely different hardware. Not top mounted, black iron instead of stainless steel, complete disaster. Team two has no idea it's wrong, drilled door mounted iron hardware, given the packaging to the scrapers. So I get to take a $400 haircut because the item is packaged incorrectly. Had to come up with another solution on the spot. I'm going to try to return the unit for refund, we'll see how that goes. Pretty much a major bummer. 30 inch door is working great, I would recommend better floor guide for units of this size.
