What is brickmold?

Asked by: Alma
The primary function of exterior trim such as brick molding is to seal gaps that occur between a wall and a window or door. The installation of trim prevents water from seeping into the wall from the outside. Exterior trim also serves a decorative function by providing visual contrast to the area around windows and doors. Wood is the traditional material used for trim; however, vinyl and composite products are gaining popularity due to their lower required maintenance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Beautiful!!! We purchased this patio door this week and Home Depot/contractors installed it yesterday...It is gorgeous! Solid, sturdy, energy efficient. The contractors did an amazing job building the frame and installing. I also purchased a handle/key set to go with the door. Definitely worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and durable I installed these doors in place of a pair of flimsy OSB "doors" as part of my shed-to-office conversion. In my installation, the doors face directly West into the hot Texas sun. While I can feel *some* heat on the inside glass, it's minimal. Before replacing the old doors, I measured the heat transfer with an infrared thermometer. In the late afternoon, the old doors would regularly reach over 100F. With the air conditioning turned off, these doors never go over 80, even when the exterior temperature reaches 100F-103F. Pros: * Installation was straightforward, but is definitely a two-person job. (This is hardly surprising considering that they're pre-hung steel doors with large sections of double-pane glass.) * Instructions were helpful. Having the electronic (PDF) version online also helped after I misplaced the printed copy that came with the doors. * Squaring the frame during installation was not difficult. The frame itself is very strong, and keeps itself nearly square even without shimming. (Still, shimming is required, much like, well, Every Door Ever.) * Performs admirably in an insulation / temperature control capacity. * Bottom sill is very strong. Before I installed steps outside of the shed (my shed is on a raised pier-and-beam foundation, putting the door about 18" above the ground), the sill protruded about 4" beyond the walls. The sill did not bend despite numerous children, dogs and adults regularly stepping on it. * Great price for such an attractive and solidly-built unit. * Frame did not bow under pressure from the Great Stuff expanding foam I used to seal the gaps between the door frame and the 2x4 studs. Cons: * None so far! Additionally, the Home Depot delivery crew were nice enough to carry this and other materials to our shed, about 200 feet away from the street, even after I had told them they could leave it in our driveway. This saved me having to recruit neighbors and friends to move everything. I'll definitely be using the delivery service in the future for bulky and heavy items.
