The air that it takes to spin is the heat in the attic. The rising heat causes the turbine to rotate and pules out the heat

It was very little. I don't know the exact speed but they were turning when some of my neighbors were not. I would guess 5 mph. It will depend on how your house is situated, neighbors house blocking, 2 or 1 story, trees and any other building that might be in the way. I will say they are a good quality and work well.

This is an important question!!
Turbines should spin with very little wind speed. If your turbines are not spinning freely they need replacement. If they make noise when spinning replace them as total failure is imminent.
As a Const Tech from BGSU I recommend the externally braced turbines which are better structurally.

No they work off the wind. Takes very little wind to turn it. Mine works well. I recommend 1 turbine for every 600 sq. ft.

How many do I need and is this okay to use with lots of rain?

I'm hoping to get these for my 1008 square foot one level ranch style house (roof slope is fairly normal). How many of these do I need to properly ventilate my house? The current ventilation is not sufficient.

Also, I live in the Pacific Northwest where it rains pretty much every day during the winter. I haven't seen any of these on other houses and am wondering if they are good to use in this area.

Lastly, what other materials do I need to install one of these? We would be putting a new hole in the roof to install one.

Well Pinski, I live in Florida and NOBODY gets more rain and heavier than here and no leaks in ten years. I'd recommend the externally braced units as better structurally.

If your a DIY'r and confident up on a roof go for it. Remember to install between studs only. Go to u-tube for a installation video for required tools

Generally these are used in areas of heat to vent attics, and you should have two. One will always spin faster than the other. In rainy areas I would vent on ends rather than cut two holes in roof as needed to install roof turbines like these.

With all the 90+ degree days in July( in GA.) and after getting $300+ electric bill it was time to replace the three non working roof turbine on our home. After checking for the correct size and for the best price I finally found them on line at Home Depot. They were so easy to install, it only took less than thirty minutes for me to replace all three and I am 74 years old. They are making a difference because I check daily on line with my GA. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by the best replacement turbin head ever took all tools etc. that I thought I would need, put on patio roof, wind blew off old turbin head, so I had to remove brace,no problem, put new head on, had to drill 3 new holes,again no big deal,slight breeze blowing, turbin was spinning, got spray paint,just held it up to the turbin, let wind spin it, painting done. touched up a few spots on base with tar,1/2 hour start to finnish.including ladder up ,ladder down & cleanup.I like the sturdy feel of the exterior brace,and the top and bottom bearings, feels real strong.I am glad I found this, it saved a lot of work replacing the turbin & base. I have a brand new roof on ,& did not want to start tearing up the shingles. Thanks Home Depot. August 16, 2016

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by An OK replacement. This is a good product to replace existing turbine heads without disturbing your roof shingles. Loosen and remove the existing head and then slip the new one on, not.exactly. The new turbine heads were the exact same diameter as the existing turbine base. I had to modify the old bases to fit the new heads. The packing could be better. One of the new heads was slightly bent off center. I bent it back in place, but it doesn't turn as freely as the other new unit.. In retrospect, I should have returned it. August 2, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gtrat product I had to drill additional screw holes in my mounting tube because the existing ones did not line up with the screws in the turbine head. No problem. Everything matched up perfectly. I took it down and painted it so it could match the other existing turbines. The installation was very easy and only took a few minutes. The turbine accepted the primer paint very well and the main coats of paint went on very easily. The turbine spins well and quietly when the wind blows which is exactly what I wanted. I'm very pleased with this purchase. June 14, 2016
