Actual size is 16 x 7.75. Hardware is measured to make it look like you're getting more than you're paying for. Wood is a great example of this.

Are shorter set screws available for these vents?

I have researched on line but can not seem to find shorter versions.
Asked by: Jerry
The screws are removable, just take one out and replace it with a shorter one with the same size and tpi. Make sure you time your threads putting the new ones in.

After reading the negative reviews, I tested the 15 vents purchased by putting them in our freezer for 15 minutes. All worked correctly, requiring no adjustment. Installation was very easy. All 15 are opening and closing correctly with temperature changes as of now--days after installation. The instructions do not include any reference to adjusting these vents, so, while there is an adjustment screw visible, I have no idea which way to turn the screw to make adjustment if needed.

I put a few of these in last fall to determine if they would close automatically when it reached 40 degrees or less. All of them performed as advertised. One tip I learned from a other reviewer was (before installing) to put them in the freezer to make sure they closed. One did not close but was I able to make a small adjustment and it worked great afterwards. They are easy to install and I think much better than those that have clips.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product The negative reviews don't seem to understand how you adjust the vent. The vent operates using a metal spring that expands and contracts with temperature. It should be fully open at 70 degrees and fully closed at 40. The way you check this is by putting the vent in the refrigerator, making sure it is in the same position as you'll install it (top side up, standing up). After half and hour or so, the vent should be closed. If it's not, use a screwdriver to adjust the spring - you'll see a plastic notch on the side with the metal cover. It only takes half a turn or so one way or the other, and the grates will spring shut when you hit it right. Test each one and you'll have no problems. I used these to replace the old metal grates on my house. I took the extra step of getting some 1/2 in. foam insulation board and cutting it to fit around the body of the vent, mainly to take up the extra space between the opening in the wall and the vent itself and keep it centered (so I had the vent boxed in with foam board on all sides). I put down a stripe of expanding foam insulation around the opening to seal any cracks and slid it in. This keeps the vent secure and tight in the hole without having to rely solely on the screws. A nice bead of silicone caulking around it to keep water out to finish it off. The days after I installed them were well below freezing at night, and these vents works flawlessly. It made a tremendous difference in the temperature of the floor and kept the house much more comfortable. Take the time to adjust the vent if it needs it and use care when installing it and you'll have no problems.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The features are great but do not last. 19 of these vents were installed when our house was built and they worked great for the first 6 years. Now, 9 of them no longer function properly. They remain closed all the time. I have removed them and tried to adjust and lubricate but it did not change anything. After 6 years I have to replace at least 9 and wonder if the others will stop functioning also. Any suggestions?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Satisified After reading all the negative comments I was hesitant to purchase. However, I purchased two just to try. Put them both in the freezer before installation to test and both closed and then reopened at room temperature. Installed them both before a cold night. One closed and one did not. However, there is an adjustment on the side that makes it close sooner. Made a slight turn of the screw and it works correctly. I like them and plan to replace the remainder of my old vents.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works just fine. I bought 10 of these in late January 2015. One installed thus far -- the screws secure it well -- and I caulked the vent flange before pressing into place to make sure vermin couldn't find a way in. After reading some reviews, I put one in the refrigerator at 32F and the vanes closed up after ~10 minutes. Sitting in the room, the vanes opened back up in ~20 minutes. I noted that the vanes close only if the unit is right side up -- be sure to put "TOP" at the top!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from These are junk I bought and installed 5 of these vents last winter. Two of them have failed in the closed position in less than a year.
