We needed this fan to get rid of the asphalt odor in the house for a period of 4 months after having a new GAF roof installed. We have a hip roof with small ventilation holes around the perimeter. The house was built with 2 round vents near the peak - one on the East and one on the West. The installer put in 4 slant back vents. Two to replace those near the peak and lower down - 1 on the North and 1 on the South.
I believe that this created an imbalance in the venting system so that the there was not enough exhaust for the intake. The roofer agreed to replace the West facing slant back vent with a solar attic fan, if I purchased one.
I chose a single 500 CFM even though for my square footage, it was recommended that I have two. I decided that I only needed one because I had plenty of other vents and I didn't want all the cold air in the attic removed. More exhaust might have caused too much heated outside air to be pulled in during the summer. The 500 CFM size seems to be the perfect size. When the air conditioner kicks on, the period where the interior vents blow hot air into the house is much shorter. It is almost non-existent.

The fan only starts when the sun is directly overhead, if at all. It needs a bigger solar panel.
As is, it is a complete waste of money.

I purchase 2 of these units when I put a new roof on the house. We noticed an improvement the upstairs temperature almost immediately after installing. I expect to see a return on my investment in reduced AC costs. I highly recommend.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Jeff Works very well and is quiet
Puchased this solar fan at Home Depot for $221 and my roofer charged me $100 to install it at the same time they were re-roofing my house. The fan works very well and is extremely quiet. I was surprised at how well it moved out the air in the attic. This fan does not have a thermostat so it will work in both summer and winter which is a good thing as you need air circulation in your attic in winter as well as summer. Make sure you aim the solar panel to the south or southwest as much as possible and this is also noted in the instruction manual. It will work facing east or west but South works best year round especially in winter. I live in Michigan

They look well made and both working as soon as the sunshine hits them.
Expectation is to reduce loft temperature:
a) to reduce my power bill.
b) to protect items stored in loft
c) to extend the life of the roof
I see them as a good investment both for me and my planet.

I have vaulted ceiling in my living room and the builders didn't have access to the back three bedrooms so I could get into the attic without making a hatch inside the house. I installed the fan myself and noticed there wasn't any controls to turn the fan on and off. I purchased a separate thermostat that hangs into the attic area and it turns the fan on and off as needed. Where I needed to install the fan was also shaded most of the day by a tree so it was nice that the solar panel was removable and I moved it 60 feet from the fan and attached it to a tripod that I was using for my TV antenna. I also installed an on/off switch so I can turn it off during the winter months. The fan is quiet and I noticed the three back bedrooms cool off quicker and stay evenly cooled.
