How do I attach the ductwork to the roof cap?

Asked by: Jenny
It's shown in this video from This Old House:,,20783011,00.html (Lowes website didn't link the URL but it work) Tom Silva cut tabs in the end of the sheet metal and nailed two into the roof. A duct adapter plate would provide a cleaner seal of the store has 7" in stock (depending on the size you are using). Trace a lid or bowl for a cutting line then use a jig saw on medium speed. Be sure to use plenty of caulking just like he does in the video. A google search of "DIY appliance roof vent installation" also provides other examples. Good luck and don't worry it will work. Customer Reviews

7 in. Appliance Vent Kit - Roof is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY I own a roofing company. As others have stated, the damper cannot handle any wind. In the slightest breeze the damper opens and closes, "flapping" in the breeze, making a loud noise. We tried this product because the supplied ducting snaps directly into the vent, whereas the Broan does not. This is a huge plus as it saves us many hours of fabricating an adapter to secure the ducting to the cap in a proper manner to meet building code. Our customer complained about the flapping noise within two days and we needed to go out and replace it with a Broan. The Broan are built MUCH better. Hold the Broan and the GAF in your hands and you'll see the difference instantly. Proper ducting attachment is a huge plus, but not nearly huge enough to install this inferior product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Should have not wasted my money. Should include a section... Should have not wasted my money. Should include a section of flex for final microwave to pipe exactness and a weatherstrip type compressible seal where vent meets 7x10 pipe

Rated 1 out of 5 by from As long as the wind never blows into it... The issue is with the vent that installs on the roof. If the wind cannot blow into this vent, it should be fine. That's a bit unrealistic, I think. A slight breeze blowing into the opening opens the door then it slams shut a few seconds later. Ok, that's a little annoying but I can live with it. Now imagine some rain along with that wind. Our kitchen had rain come in through this roof vent. Our roof is fairly flat so that does not help.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Average for cost Pipe is as expected which works well. The back draft damper is inadequate. Leaked so badly that I had to replace it with an in line damper. We had the smell of the roofing tar every day because of the poor seal of the damper.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sound is horribly annoying!!! The other reviews are right, the noise this thing makes will keep you up all night long. Terrible design with the slightest wind causing the metal damper to flap back and forth non-stop. As others have mentioned, once you install this, flash it, shingle around it, and hook it it's too late. Don't buy it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Roof Cap Flap Horrible. Whoever design this product forget about the weather in East coast. A little wind can cause this Roof Cap Flap, sound like a "Flapper" . Just imagine what happen when wind blowing snow into your Roof Cap Flap and down through your duct in the middle of winter night while you sleep. So don't wasted your time with this product, because once the Roof Cap in place is too late.
