Alarm Contacts

Is it safe to drill the door jamb and door for a small recessed alarm contact? The jamb side and door itself would require a 3/8-inch hole to accommodate the alarm device: 1.5 inch deep on door, through jamb into wall cavity on jamb side.

If so, are there any guidelines where these holes should not be placed? Assume the drilling would be in top or bottom 4-inches of lockset side of moving door panel (so not into glass pane, same for jamb side). Note this is the side of the door and frame - not the top or bottom.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 15 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice solid door for the money I read a few bad reviews for this door and almost did not buy it. Well I bought it anyways. It is a heavy solid door and looks good inside and out. When it is time to replace my up stairs slider I will buy this model again.I really like the keyed entry. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My Contractor Loved It My contractor installed about 75 sliders over the years but never heard of Masterpiece doors. He now says based on installing this door, he will start to recommend Masterpiece over Andersen. Easier to install, good quality, great price. But buy the Andersen screen as other reviewers have stated. July 24, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice door, but no screen. We purchased this door as a replacement for patio swing doors. It's a nice door - we like the woodgrain interior, and the fact that the door can be relatively easily painted. It's heavy (and appears to be very sturdy), so it will more than likely stand the elements (a reason for our purchase). Installation (this sort of job is beyond our capabilities, so we used a local handyman who has done several jobs for us) was relatively straight forward. Down side is that the door does not come with a screen, which has to be a separate purchase. But otherwise, a very good door for the price (and it has certainly improved our home). June 18, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The look is great! When our contractor suggested sliding glass doors, I immediately said "no" but after going on line and researching the Masterpiece door, I changed my mind. We are very pleased with the overall appearance of the door and the functionality is great. The price is great compared to other doors we looked at. Would definitely recommend this door to anyone. My only complaint is that we had to drive to Conroe, Tx from the southwest part of Houston to preview the door. Certainly it should be in more than just one store.....should at least be sold somewhere in Southwest Houston where you have several Home Depot Stores. June 10, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good buy. Bought this door sight unseen based on online reviews. (Thanks everybody.) Good looking door that I installed yesterday with help of a carpenter in under 2 hours (not including trim). Beware that the snap-in nail flanges can be installed 2 ways. The illustrations and instructions are not clear. The portion of the flange that lays next to the frame needs to point into the house. If installed backwards, the flanges prevent the door from being installed deep enough (about a 1/2 inch shy) and interfere with exterior trim. I didn't have to adjust the rollers, but the latch needed a very quick adjustment. We definitely recommend this door, but we are aggravated that Home Depot doesn't carry the screened door south of Dallas, even for in-store pick-up. March 5, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Door was bent The door was bent, so I could not close it. I bought two, but the both have the same problem. October 14, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great door at a great price We are really happy with this door. We wanted a door of composite material with the wood-grain on the interior, and they started at about $1,700 (at our local Home Depot) so when we found this one online for such a reasonable price I was pleased, but a little skeptical about the quality. However, it didn't disappoint. The look is nice, and we plan to stain it to match our decor, which I didn't know was an option when we ordered it. It seems to be very efficient and the seal is air-tight. Nice feature to have the extra lock up high (we have little kids). My husband installed this himself in a couple of hours without a problem. And the delivery company we had were excellent and carried the door, which weighs about 250 pounds, all the way around to our back patio, saving us tons of time and effort! February 19, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Way Better then cheap vinyl doors These doors are great. I bought 2 sets of them. The wood interior look is great. Looking forward to staining them. Installation was pretty straight forward. They are very heavy to move to install. But they look rich and slide nice. Great purchase October 23, 2013
