Assembly, can this item be assembled? From the reviews it sounds like it is a major pain to assemble. Thanks!
Asked by: MeatLover
It's really not too difficult to assemble. Just unbox it by flipping it upside down, leaving the outer carton intact, and using it as your workbench. 90% of the assembly is done with the smoke upside-down.

Can this smoker be left outside all year long?
Asked by: BigRoy
I have one of the higher-end covers from the Cover-Store. It's oversized and therefore covers almost everything down to the legs. You may want to remove the drip tray as it will fill up with water during rainstorms. I've only had my ThermoTemp for a few months now, but it is outside 100% of the time, along with my grill...also covered in a Cover-Store Elite cover.

It maintained the temperature with the thermostatic control within 5 degrees up or down. With my old propane smoker, I had to keep an eye on it very closely, not with this unit. I like the size and the safety feature about shutting off the gas supply if wind blows out flame. Good unit, I would recommend.

I have the temperature control that electricity gave me and an open flame that makes better smoke than a heating element. Last weekend's pork butt may possibly be my best ever! I've now done brisket, Cornish hens, baby backs and pork shoulder and all were winners!

The first EVER thermostatically controlled gas smoker for the consumer...and it's INSULATED! No I don't work for Masterbuilt, but I have owned three of their electric models and one of their lower end gas smokers. I burned up the electric models over a period of three years, but I only used them approximately 60-70 hours total. I used the gas smoker twice and had a dickens of a time trying to keep the temperature steady. This ThermoTemp is AWESOME! The entire box is double-walled to keep the smoke/heat inside. I did upgrade it by added Nomex gaskets around both doors, which all but eliminates smoke leaks. You will need to purchase a dual-probe thermometer though. I recommend the SMOKE by Thermoworks. You just can't "dial in" exact temperatures with that big ole dial on the front of the unit. The temperatures range +/- 45-60 degrees using that alone. Now the temperature sits +/- 10 degrees from what you set it at.

Assembly is time consuming, especially the legs which use about 25 screws and nuts. Legs with wheels are a great feature. Assembly is difficult as some of the screws/nuts are nearly inaccessible, and some of the parts fit poorly such as "burner box kit" to "bottom smoker body", very important parts. Assembly is difficult as 1 paper printed, 2 PDF, and 1 video different versions of the instructions range from mediocre to confounding. Temperature control is excellent and holds steady within 5-10 F. Temperature control is useless as burner flames out every time the setting is reduced from 250 F to 225 F with ZERO ambient wind. Wood chip tray is better than some, worse than others. A tray lasts about 30 minutes and smoke production below 250 F is nil, so the claim of unattended operation for many hours (overnight) is going to be without any smoke. Water tray appears to be low-grade stainless which holds heavy smoke stains despite dishwasher cleaning and scouring with abrasive cleanser. 90 day warranty is short. Bottom line: It is no better than the significantly cheaper propane smoker it was meant to replace.
