Answer:
NO. You will have to manually defrost. But I doubt you'd have to do it more than twice a year. I suppose with lighter use you could do it once a year, but I'd recommend at least once every 6 months for the best performance.

Answer:
No. Manual defrost. It does have a drain plug in the bottom so you can drain it after defrosting. The drain on the outside of the freezer can be hooked to a garden hose to drain it away from the freezer area.

What does the 1, 4, 7 mean?

This question is from 14.8 cu. ft. Chest Freezer in White

Beside the temp controls(the 0-7) there is another icon that resembles a thermometer & it has the number 1 4 7 on it. What does this do? I attempted to move it from 7 to 4 but it wouldn't move.

I bought a refrigerator/freezer thermometer at the grocery store & set it in there. It's on 6 right now & the inside temp is 5 degrees, but my hot dogs are still not frozen. So, I'm just going to wait a little longer & see if they freeze before I call anybody. (freezer has only been plugged in 24 hrs)

Amy exactly where is this setting that you are discussing. I only have the temp control inside the unit itself. I have a whole cow, beef completely frozen with a temp internal setting of 4 in less than 24hours.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 37 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Freezer for the money My daughter and her husband are expecting their first child. They wanted a freezer so they could prepare their meals in advance and have them ready to thaw quickly and eat when the baby arrived. This freezer fits the bill. It's the perfect size for the space and priced better than any other freezer of that size. Ultra-quiet too. December 13, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Freezer! I love this freezer. Keeps stuff frozen and has two large baskets that help keep stuff organized and more readily available. Not sure how long they will last being plastic in freezing temps but they have lasted for a month now and I have removed them from the freezer loaded with 20lbs of meet several times to access stuff underneath. My teachers would cringe at that run on sentence! This replaces a 20+ year old Montgomery Ward freezer of the same size. Hopefully I will see the cost savings of a new energy efficient freezer. I really trust Maytag quality, hopefully now that whirlpool owns them they don't go down hill. I bought a Maytag fridge 20 years ago and it is still going strong. Bought Maytag washer and gas dryer 9 years ago, and doing great also. Also bought Maytag dishwasher about 2 years ago. Yup! I like Maytag! Just need to get a range soon... Oh ya, it has a drain plug in bottom for when you defrost, very nice! January 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Freezer So Far We've had this freezer for 6 months 1 week and have had 0 problems with it. It does an excellent job staying cold, defrosting was very easy and the sliding baskets are very nice to have. It would be nice if extra baskets weren't so expensive to help with organization. But I got around the typical chest freezer organizational issues by using fabric "drawers" made for cube-style closet organizer systems. 6 12"x12" fabric drawers fit perfectly in the bottom of the freezer. And I was able to buy 10 of these "drawers" for less than the price of 1 sliding basket. We liked this freezer so much, we bought a GE 5 cu. ft. chest freezer a month ago to hold the overflow that won't fit into this one. September 5, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great clearance buy! My old freezer conked out. It was an upright. that looked similar to a refrigerator, so it had quite a bit of room. I went in to home depot planning to buy a new one, of the same style. At the time, they had a 20% off appliance sale going on, but that only applied to certain items. And unfortunately, it only applied to a large freezer (this one) on clearance. I hemmed and hawed and finally decided "Oh, what the heck" and when I got to checkout and it was only $306, I was pretty happy with it. Also, the check out lady gave me a free 2 year product replacement plan on it, in case anything went wrong. I've had it at home for awhile, and the ice buildup isn't as bad as I was expecting. I suppose every 6 months it'll need a defrost, but that's much better than my old upright which was absolutely caked in ice after about 3 months. Also, since it's a chest freezer, all the cold air doesn't "fall" out when you open it, it stays in and so it's more energy efficient that way also. The yearly estimated cost for electricity is $38, which beats the $60 or so I used on the old one. And, being nearly 15 cubic feet, it's super roomy. I still haven't filled it more than 25% full or so, but I guess in worst case, next summer if it's super hot, I can crawl inside for 15 minutes and cool right off! So yeah, this was a good buy. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid Chest Freezer Perfect for what we need it for. The delivery team removed the old chest freezer from our basement and replaced it with the new one. The only feature it's missing is a light inside but we have a light directly above so it was not necessary. December 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just the right size! The freezer was delivered in a timely fashion. I like the two baskets for putting smaller items. It is the perfect size for my family of two December 17, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Freezer for Developing our Freezer Food Library Large, High capacity, not heavy when empty so easy for to adults to move. Will Be great if perfoms as indicated. Only had for 3 weeks. December 17, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Was purchased as a housewarming gift. My daughter seems very happy with it. Only issue was pick-up assignment. My daughter lives in another community and needed a friend to transport it. I was not able to list more than one alternate pick-up person. Since my daughter was later arriving due to weather and traffic after work it became a virtual circus trying to get it picked up. Would suggest at least 2 alternates be allowed when purchasing online. If they are, I couldn't access it. January 20, 2015
