Answer:
I just measured it at 24.5" on the outside - 29.5" if you include the door and handle.
Interior is 22" with the shelf measuring 16" deep. It's a great working freezer and holds a half steer and pig for us!

Yes. I currently have this freezer in my garage and haven't had any issues. My previous freezer, a 30 year old chest freezer, was kept in the garage. Keep the coils clean of dust and debris and you should be ok. It may not run as efficiently in the summer if the garage temps get extreme but I wouldn't worry.

cindy,
Thank you for viewing this Maytag Upright Freezer. I have cut and pasted below a portion of the location requirements from the use and care guide to help answer your answer. You can view the whole guide on the product page by scrolling down the bottom of the page or clicking on the More Info tab. As long the space where you want to store your appliance, the garage, doesn't fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, then you would be good to go. This requirement allows the freezer to operate at its optimal performance.
IMPORTANT: Do not install the freezer near an oven, radiator, or
other heat source, nor in a location where the temperature will fall
below 40°F (5°C).

Hi Cindy.
That's where we've put ours. Perfect location for us and just steps out the door from our kitchen for easy storage. I can't see any problems if the area is dry. I'm not sure how your area compares with the West coast for temp fluctuations but we get our share of below freezing days during the winter and our last freezer lasted years.. and years in the same location.

Thank you for viewing this Maytag Upright Freezer. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Problems within the first year This freezer had a problem (defrost timer) within the first year and I lost all the food in it. Now it's been 3 years since I purchased it and it now has leaked all the freon and another freezer full of food is ruined. I had bought the extended warranty so it could be worse but once it's fixed this time, I'm getting rid of it. I will not be buying anything with Maytag brand on it in the future. March 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice and roomy! We bought this freezer about a month ago and so far it has been great. I love that it is frostfree - it's the first freezer we've owned that is frost free and would never go back! I like that there is enough space for all our food - especially when we have 1/2 beef and pig we fill it with. The only thing I notice is that when it is running through it's cooling cycle it is a little louder than our old freezer - but not a big deal for us since it is not in the main living area. The frostfree feature FAR outweighs a bit of noise. Would definitely purchase this freezer again. It serves our family of 5 needs and then some! December 9, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by If only it had a lock! We've had this appliance for a month now. So far, everything is going fine. We've had no problems with any frosting. I appreciate the temperature controls that are found inside and easily accessible. You do have to prop the door open, when loading with sides of meat, or bulk amounts of food. Once that door closes, you have to wait about 5 minutes before you can open the door, again. For security, we've had to wrap the entire freezer with a plastic coated chain with a padlock. We raise our own Irish Dexter Cattle. And we've had issues with someone in the area getting into our basement and stealing meat. November 8, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by A total lemon!!!!! Within the first 8 months, the fan motor died and had to be replaced! Two years later, the fan motor needed to be replaced again to the tune of $400!!!!! That's over half what I paid for it less than 3 years ago!!!! April 6, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by worked just long enough for the warranty to run out! We replaced a 50 year old freezer that finally died with this product, talk about disappointment. After arriving about 3 weeks late it worked for just over a year. From the every beginning, even on the coldest setting I could not keep ice cream in the freezer because it wouldn't stay firm. I went to get something out the other day and the top 2 shelves were completely thawed out. And of course we have no recourse because we did not purchase the extended warranty, which I think is a crock!!!! Like I said I replaced a 50 year old freezer with this one and it did not even work for 2 years. July 7, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not Happy Have had freezer maybe a yr. (give or take) & I have had to defrost three times. The bottome grill keeps freezing over. Last time (I hadn't gotten into it for some time & found the top two shelves thawed or soft - lost several items. Will be calling a service repair & do not recommend this model/make for a freezer. February 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good freezer at a decent price We've had it a month and have been happy with it. The storage space is good and it doesn't run all the time like our older freezer. Hopefully it will provide the energy savings promised. The people who delivered it switched the door opening side for us, but didn't do it properly. Maytag sent someone out right away and fixed the issue. If I had one thing to change it would be to put wire brackets on the door shelves rather than the single piece molded plastic. That would provide an extra 1/4 inch of space on each shelf. October 5, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great features I needed to replace my freezer immediately. After searching for several days I came across this one. I liked the features of this unit. This unit replaced a 16 cu. ft. unit. It occupies almost the same amount of space as the old unit. The additional 4 cu. ft. of storage makes a world of difference between the two units. I am very impressed with the power consumption of this freeer. Which means that it will be very economical to use. November 4, 2014
