How noisy is this fridge, if you want it for the kitchen, and not the garage?

Asked by: Lena
it's not too bad. In my open floor plan home it doesn't interfere with TV viewing nor music playing. It is slightly louder than the old fridge we had, but, it cools as designed, unlike our old fridge.

30 in. W 18 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator in Monochromatic Stainless Steel is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 350.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome fridge I have had this fridge for several months now and it is a best buy for the money in my opinion. Quiet, but hard working , a basic fridge that meets all the requirements great for kitchenette , man cave, extra storage. Some complain they couldn't fit a gallon jug in door. True, but if you reverse the shelves, you can easily fit gallon jugs and two liter drinks in it. Ice maker. Is optional . It is attractive as well. I have a 2200 dollar fridge and this little guy cools much better. Door opens left to right with no protruding handles. Nice bright interior. Delivery was phenomenal.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cools fast and maintains good temps. BUT quality control is poor. This fridge feels very spacious for an 18 cu. The LED lights in both compartments are a nice touch. It cools well and the freezer is frost free. The glass shelves are light, durable and easy to clean. The three drawers slide out with ease and have ample room to store goods. This fridge isn’t silent or whisper quiet, but quiet enough not to be bothersome. It doesn’t produce a loud click like my old 10+ yr. old fridge when the compressor kicks in and overall seems to be a bit quieter than the old one. The stainless looks great and it does resist finger prints quite well. The left and right sides are a somewhat matching gray which looks nice. All sides (except for the rear) are magnetic (including the entire front). However the front SS easily scratches by magnets. The doors are reversible which I had no problem doing myself. At the factory they’re installed opening from the left to the right like in the product photos. Although reversing the doors wasn’t difficult, getting the screw/hole covers/caps out was. The caps didn’t go back in well (on the other side) and now don’t sit flush. In the manual it is stated that a “door reversing kit” needs to be purchased separately. I don’t think that it’s necessary at all and that replacement (or better) caps should’ve been provided. This fridge serves its main purpose quite well. It cools fast and maintains good temps. BUT quality control (QC) was skipped. So here is the “not so good” part of my review: - Let me starts by saying that I was surprised to see how short (in height) this fridge is. The total height of the fridge is 65” which is at my eye level. The freezer section is large and should’ve been on the bottom instead. Although the height may be convenient for some, I’m 5’9” and have to bend over in order to see anything above the middle shelf/drawer inside the refrigerator section. Not very convenient. - Although the drawers themselves are nice and easily slide back and forth, the wheels and glide channels were covered in tons of clear goop. It is like clear grease to help the drawers slide providing lubrication and noise reduction. It works and helps, however the amount of that grease was obnoxious – see pics. It has the consistency and appearance of clear silicone caulk, but with a greasy feel. The applied amount was 10 times more than necessary and I spent a lot of time cleaning it out with paper towels. It was also smeared beyond the intended areas. - It is advertised that a standard gallon-sized milk or water container would fit in the door shelf bin – that is false! Actually there isn’t much room to fit anything tall either. Just one area on the bottom of the door. - Inside the fridge there is a button to control the 4 temperature settings marked by a green light. But there is no indication of which setting does what and where is the cold vs coldest setting. Only a “recommended” mark. - The light switch which engages when the door is opened is poorly positioned for those who will reverse the doors. I have accidentally hit many times while trying to reach into the fridge. It should’ve been positioned on the upper part of the frame instead of the side. - Just like quality control was skipped with the grease, there is a bigger issue in the design which compromises safety. The door corner edges where the sheet metal is bent and meets is sharp and exposed. Most other SS fridges have smooth corners because they were machined or are covered with a color matching plastic strip. These are bare and sharp. My girlfriend and I both have accidentally hurt (cut/scratched) ourselves on these corners while opening or closing the door. I’m not sure if it is a design flaw or a manufacturing defect, but it isn’t right and simply dangerous. I contacted Maytag about it and they knew nothing about it. They did set up a repair appointment and ordered replacement doors. I was told that it could take up to 10 weeks for the new doors to ship/arrive – it’s already been 3 weeks and no updates. Then I would need to set up another appointment to get them installed. But something tells me that the new ones will be the same. - Along with the other QC issues there were some waxy residue in the areas around the seal. I had to scrape it off with my nails to avoid scratching the fridge and then wiped the rest with paper towels. - Lastly, I am not sure if it was the movers’ fault or done at the factory, but there were dirty finger marks all along the inside bottom of the fridge. Also the screws that hold the hinge for the doors were screwed in so tight that they bent the frame a bit inwards. Not super noticeable, but a bit of an eye sore. For basic cooling needs this fridge is good. It’s a bit on the short side for me or anyone 5’7”+ in my opinion. I think Maytag dropped the ball with their quality control and accommodating a variety of needs. This appliance would serve well as a spare cooling box. But I cannot recommend it as a great everyday family appliance.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's new, it works I bought this unit about a month ago. Once I started using it. I noticed several design flaws. It has a door stopper that does not allow shelves to be removed easily for cleaning, or moving to a different level. A Gallon of milk would not fit into this refrigerator. The control panel is in the center, where it gets in the way of putting food on the top shelf. I like the wide lunchmeat drawer. I made a service call to Maytag regarding the doorstoppers, and the reply was totally unsatisfactory. So much for TOP service. I am replacing a Kenmore that was 16 years old and getting tired. Rated 2 out of 5 by from A refigerator The Temperature controller is a pain to operate you must have the manual to adjust unless you can remember everything, due to the fluctuation in temperature in the kitchen (summer, winter). I like food and drinks to be around 33-34 degrees but with the digital adjustments I could only get this unit to 36-37 or 30-31. I miss the old dial control knob. Also the butter tray keeps getting bumped open when you open the door and anything in there keeps falling out on to the floor, it should have been placed in the middle. It is on the right side which is the side that opens, probably harder to reach if hinges were on the opposite side. I switched hinge side easily for my convenience. This has a flat backside that fits almost tight to the wall, has no drip tray under or a way to clean around compressor and coils for hair and dust collecting which is a concern of mine for efficiency purposes in near future. I have also been hearing a noise like a fan is running and needs oil, started about a month after being plugged in. Placing a gallon jug is ok but you have to stay to each side of the temperature controller, I have three gallon jugs and you have to take all out to get to the back one you want, there are adjustable racks with limited fitment height. 2.5 Stars because of digital adjustments, butter tray placement, and simply the lack of improving the design of a refrigerator after all these years for this retail cost.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Love the fridge, disappointed in the surface We love the fridge on the inside. We've had it a few weeks. However, I am high disappointed in the "fingerprint resistant" stainless. My other 2 Maytags are not and they seem to be more resistant without paying for this "feature". Futhermore, my 13 year old put a simple magnet on the fridge and it deeply scatched this "resistant" surface.

We bought this refrigerator in Jan 2017 and after having it 2 weeks it started being very LOUD and wouldn't shut off. After a few days it looked like a blizzard was going on inside the freezer, I had to defrost it twice. I called Home Depot and they gave me the number to Whirlpool because they won't take it back. So I called and they sent a repair man out and I knew I was in trouble when he ask me if I had any DUCT TAPE!! He put the duct tape all over the back of the refrigerator and said if that didn't work to call them back. After having to defrost it again by the end of the same week he came out I called them back and they sent out the same guy and after he talked to someone on the phone for 30 mins he said it was the thermostat and it'll take 2 weeks to get it in. 2 Weeks?, this is 2017 why can't they over night it? I ask him what I was suppose to do in the mean time and he said "keep defrosting"!, and left. So now its been 2 weeks, I went all of Feb and March without a working refrigerator. Since he left my house, that thing sounded like it was a plane about to land in my kitchen and now its not working at all!!!! At least I don't have to DEFROST!!! DO NOT BUY THIS REFRIGERATOR!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loud and Not Proud We purchased this item, when our refrigerator passed away in December, May it rest in peace. It seemed like a good buy, plenty of space, easy on the wallet, no interest for 6 months, not too shabby. However, it's extremely loud, the compressor sounds like our AC unit is kicking on. We tried to return it, but were past our 48 hr return window, that the delivery man didn't tell us we had. He only said," leave it plugged in for 48 hrs." Now we are stuck with it, and the payments. At least our food is cold, even if it's annoyingly loud. Lesson learned : if I don't like something in the 1st 5 minutes, return it.
