I have never had it run for less than an hour. whether I put in 3 items or more, it ALWAYS takes at least an hour and a lot of times the clothes are no cleaner than when I put them in. I will never recommend this washer to anyone. My clothes have actually come out with dry spots on them, they didn't even get wet!!!

However, there is one cycle called "Deep Water Wash" that will fill all the way up regardless of the amount of clothing you put in the washer if you feel it is necessary for a particular load of clothes. As for the water temperature selection, you are able to adjust for some cycles. For more information I have listed the Water Temp information below from the Use and Care Guide. Thank you for viewing this Maytag home appliance.
WASH TEMP
Wash Temp senses and maintains uniform water temperatures
by regulating incoming hot and cold water.
Select a wash temperature based on the type of fabric and soils
being washed. For best results and following the garment label
instructions, use the warmest wash water safe for your fabric.
• On some models and cycles, warm and hot water may be
cooler than your previous washer.
• Even in a cold and cool water wash, some warm water may
be added to the washer to maintain a minimum temperature.

Also, this model does have a cleaning cycle. The cleaning cycle is designed to be used strictly for cleaning out the machine. You can buy the "refresh" tabs at the store, or just use plain bleach. My understanding about this added feature, is to combat any bacterial build up that may occur, due to the lessor amounts of detergent and water used when washing clothes. Which brings in to question the whole idea of using less amounts of soap and water. If using less was really cleaning our clothes, then why would there be an issue with bacterial buildup. That has never been an issue in the traditional washing machines of the past -- never!

Yes, this machine has a "Clean Cycle". This is meant for cleaning and deodorizing the empty machine. Manufacturer recommends once a month. You just add one tablet (can be purchased at any supermarket) OR you can just add 1 cup of liquid bleach in the bleach dispenser, close lid and hit "Clean Cycle." .
The Operating Manual that comes with it explains in more detail. I believe the manual is also available on the website.

Answer:
This is a high efficiency washing machine. It's not going to fill with water. It senses the load amount by weight and soil level and adds the appropriate amount of water to wash clothes that way. It's a bit jarring at first when you're used to the standard washing machines that fill the entire tub up. The new high efficiency technology uses less water to clean clothes.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by STAY AWAY!!! Machine made terrible clunking noises; struggled to operate; didn't cover the clothes with water; and Maytag didn't want to take any accountability for a faulty machine. "They" told the Home Depot that the machine was "supposed to sound like that". Totally unacceptable. I returned both washer and dryer and upgraded to a wonderful set from LG. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice washing machine This Maytag washing machine has all the features that we wanted and works well. It is a little noisier than the high efficiency washer that it replaced; but we are hoping that it will last longer. The control board on our previous HE washing machine (not Maytag) failed after only 5 years. August 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Dependable Maytag Washes very well. Uses minimum water for efficient washing. Down rated this washer because it is very, very noisy. August 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great HE Top-Loader! We came off of a 15+ year old Kenmore that barely got the clothes washed, so this is definitely a step up. We purchased this on 6/23/2016 and it was delivered on 6/25/2016. Our delivery guys were fantastic and it was just about a 20 minute process, from hauling the old washer onto the truck to installing the new washer. It's a basic washer with some nice features. We've done a few loads of laundry already and I am extremely impressed with the Spin Cycle - the clothes are barely damp, which means less time in the dryer. I also like the sensor feature - it determines how much water should be used so you no longer have to decide how large your load is. And then my favorite is the glass top door - there's something so therapeutic about being able to see your clothes being washed combined with the "whirl-whirl-swish-swish" sounds that accompany the load. Great buy, will definitely stick with Maytag! June 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Washer I didn't realize this doesn't have an agitator. It is also loud. If those things aren't a problem for you, then this washer is great. June 28, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by great brand fornthe price I just gotnthis washer on 5/20/16 so far so good i had a lg topload washer that was great when it worked but kept over heating so i exchanged the lg set for this set and i love it the only issue is when it goes into spin it will vibrate alot and the washer is leveled the noice im used to because i had a cabrio a while back that was loud like this and that is normal for whirlpool/maytag brand other than the bigtime vibrating this is a great set the only thing i miss that my lg has is the Signal tones May 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by replacement washer doing well Seems to be working well for the past month. Unsure about the water use, but clothes appear clean. June 15, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Would NOT recommend this washer!!! We bought this set on a whim as my samsung front loader died and we were in need of a replacement set ASAP. Our appliance repairman suggested this set and I went straight out to Home Depot to buy it w/o doing my much needed due diligence before buying. The washer is extremely loud and doesn't seem to get all the clothes WET!!! The washing time is extremely long and the unit doesn't have necessary features that I should have looked for (there is no quick wash setting which I NEED for those one-offs!) I doubt I can return it as I've have it for over a month now - but I'm seriously having buyer remorse with this set. :( August 2, 2016
