Product Overview

Climbers are the high risers of the rose world. Ideal for fences, walls, arbors and trellises; they can grow up and over whatever you can tie them to. Cascades of blooms and lots of growth are some of the characteristics of climbers, making them an excellent choice for any garden. A classic returns. This beloved large-flowered climber erupts in bloom all summer and into fall on tough, hardy vines that quickly reach 10 to 12 ft. tall and 6 to 8 ft. wide. And such blooms. Fully double, bursting with 40 to 45 petals each, the 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 in. flowers are a luscious pink suffused with salmon and coral, with lighter tones on the petal reverse. Best of all, the flowers have a strong, spicy clove scent. Bred by American Hybridizer Bill Warriner, America is a cross of R. 'Fragrant Cloud' x 'Tradition'. Recipient of the 1976 AARS award zones 4-9. Ships bare root packaged in dormant state.

Customer Questions & Answers

Is this rose really fragrant

When can i plant in zone 8a?
Asked by: Joy
Last year my first America climbing roses bloomed and they were so pretty! Their fragrance is very nice but light. However I have heard that with some roses the older the rose the more fragrant it becomes. I am hoping for a little more fragrance this spring and summer, but if they are just like last years, I will still be delighted. Hope this helps. I ordered more America climbers this year from Mea Nursery via Home Depot and they are very strong and healthy. We should have a beautiful display this year with ten climbers altogether.

I received this notice about the America Rose back in stock in January. I live in Minnesota. What will I do with them until May?
Asked by: karen
I am from Texas so we planted our roses in February. In Minnesota I realize that may not be possible. Do you have a greenhouse? If so you could pot them and keep them warm and cozy in the greenhouse until May. Other than pot them up in a greenhouse or heel them in somewhere if the soil is workable and the ground isn't frozen, I wouldn't know what to advise you. Best bet would be to contact your local horticultural service and get their advice. Hope this helps a little.

How should this plant be secured to fence?

Does this plant need to be fastened in some way to ensure it "climbs" the fence? Can you suggest a way to help with this? We planted these in Enid, OK, it can be very windy there! And the fence is wooden with vertical slats and no posts on the planted side to aid in securing. thank you
Asked by: rosy
Roses will not actually climb on their own because they do not cling like an ivy, so we use a stretchy tie for them and tie them to our lattice fence. The stretchiness allows the rose to grow. If you use plastic zip ties they may cut the rose cane, especially if it is windy, or your rose may grow bigger eventually than the zip tie allows and it could damage the rose. I think garden centers sell a stretchy tie especially for tying climbing roses. Also I have read of someone taking white pantyhose and dying them a dark green, then cutting them into strips and tying the roses to the arbor or fence or frame with those. I have no idea if this works, but it sounds like something we may try. Hope this helps.

Surprised at the quality of the roses and the strength and size of the canes. Very healthy. They were packaged well and arrived quickly. We have them in the ground now and they are leafing out with dark purple leaves. I ordered some of these America Climbers from a well-known garden company last year and they are doing fine, but they were not the quality of these roses from Mea. The other roses were expensive but the Mea roses were priced low and yet they are really quality roses. The Mea roses look healthier and far superior to the other company's roses. Can't wait to see them bloom this year. Altogether I have ten of these roses. The other ones bloomed the first year (last year) so we are expecting a full show of America roses this year! I will order my roses from Mea Nursery via Home Depot in the future. Great price! Great quality!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Climbing Rose America I bought and planted a Climbing Rose America from Home Depot many years ago. That was the most bequtiful and abundant rose I've ever seen. My neighbors loved it so much they bought two and planted them in their yard facing ours!!! Their smell was heavenly and the blooms were HUGE!!! We moved several years ago and I hated leaving it behind. Now that we finished building and moving into our new home I can't wait to start my Rose garden this year. My first purchase is going to be the Climbing Rose America from HOME DEPOT!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Climbing Rose America This is a vibrant healthy climber that takes Finger Lakes winters in stride.Foliage is dark and full, leafs out weeks ahead of other varieties, the blossom is large and almost salmon colored. I was given one bush that was destroyed by feral cats: have since purchased 2 more that are growing nicely! Mea Nursery and Home Depot is a winning combination. Order early in the season to save on shipping and before they are all gone. You may have to plan for 2012 Buona Fortuna
