That's not a question anyone will likely be able to accurately answer for you. The product is certainly capable of what you're asking; however, the product coverage is very dependent on your water pressure.

For example, I have about 70 PSI water pressure coming from the public water line through my house to my outside faucet. My parents' house has a well out away from city/count water and their pump system is set with lower water pressure.
The coverage area will be different because the water pressure going into the unit is different.
My recommendation would be to test. I've purchased a couple units with great hopes and when they didn't work as they claimed for me, I returned them.
I will tell you this: This Melnor unit is much better than the Ray Padula and Nelson units I tested of about the same coverage area.
I hope this helps. Read Less

20' wide might be a bit much for this sprinkler on the widest setting but it will be close. Adjusting the oscillator to only go 5' each way would be fairly difficult.
If you use the width adjustment and set it to the narrowest setting, it may be as narrow as 10'. Then you could adjust the depth to cover the 20' fairly easily.

The 172-849 Oscillator has adjustments that will allow you to control oscillation from side to side and the width of the spray pattern by adjusting the angle of the nozzles. In order to get the maximum area coverage of 3900 Sq. feet you will need water pressure in the 60 PSI range.
The attached PDF shows the width and angle adjusters.

The range has worked out to be about 25 X 25 feet at full range to about 2 X 4 feet at low range. For my current use, I am able to set it for 6 feet to 25 feet wide, with an oscillating distance of 0, (zero) to 15 or so feet for each side. Yes...I use 3 oscillating sprinklers and small pattern yard sprinkler on an Orbit 4-zone water timer. The timer kicks on early each morning that it's schedule. I have each zone set to the time I want it water (Larger areas are longer than the smaller areas).
So far, this timer has worked very well with the Melnor oscillating sprinklers and coverage is excellent.

If you're talking about the type of timer that you connect at the water spigot, then yes. The timer itself simply controls the flow of water (whether it allows water to flow from the pipes into the hose) as long as you leave the water turned on...so make sure your spigot doesn't leak. It really doesn't matter what you have at the other end: this sprinkler, motion activated sprinkler, soaker hose, etc

3,900 sq. ft. Deluxe Turbo Oscillating Sprinkler is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 292.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from World's greatest sprinkler It may not be the world's greatest but it certainly is the best oscillating sprinkler I've ever used. I have two of them. The width of the spray can be adjusted from very narrow to very wide and the amount the sprinkler rotates in each direction can be independently adjusted from zero to near 90 degrees. For example, both sides could be adjusted for zero rotation which would give a spray straight up. Or one side could be set at zero and the other at full near 90 degrees which would give a spray in only one direction. Or both could be set at near 90 degrees - or any combination that you want

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good I like the range of the device and the ability to adjust the width of the spray. I have a long yard that is 25' x 55', so being able to narrow the width of the sprinkler definitely comes in handy in terms of not wasting water and watering the fence or neighbor's yard instead. So far have had no issues with the plastic adjustment tabs referenced by other reviewers. I can see if you were really hasty and pushed on the ends how they could snap off /break, but if you take the time to press on the tab closer to the body of the sprinkler I think this should last a good while. Will update the review if anything changes but so far I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Design flaw? This sprinkler stopped oscillating after five minutes of use. I restarted it, changed the range controls twice, changed water pressure and still it stopped after one or two oscillations. I see other reviewers have the same problem so I question whether the design of this sprinkler is flawed. If so, why does a large chain like Home Depot not demand that the manufacturer produce a product that WORKS? Does Home Depot really want to have unhappy customers going back to the store to return products? I was happy with the width and range adjustments (that is why I bought it) just wish it worked for me and the other reviewers. Build quality is laughable, lightweight plastic in all parts
Date published: 2016-08-15
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product Works well, I have a small yard and using this sprinkler I only have to move it a couple times due to amount of area it covers. Very easy to adjust width and distance with only a quick turn of a button. While oscillating it has got stuck once or twice so it only got four stars, otherwise this product works great.
Date published: 2016-08-09
Rated 1 out of 5 by from good in theory, poor in reality Pros: adjustable fan width and oscillating action Cons: got stuck in one direction when oscillating on the second day of use. Others seems to have the same problem, so I think this is more than just a single unit going bad, but rather a major design flaw. Overall: don't buy it!!

Date published: 2016-08-09
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Versatile I purchased one of these the other day and I was very impressed by how differently and easily it can be configured by just sliding a tab here or there. My narrow side yard was always a bit difficult to get it right without watering half of my neighbor's yard or having much of the water going down the wall of my house. This adjusts right down to exactly where I want it on a narrow 5' wide path and has a lot of reach front to back. I bought their other 3700' coverage sprinkler last year and it still works well but it does not have the width adjusting feature. I wish I'd spent $5 more and bought this 3900' coverage model instead. I'm going to stop by Home Depot on my way home today and buy a second one of these. I just had my yard aerated and overseeded and having two of these going at once (different faucets) will greatly reduce the time I spend each afternoon for the next two weeks watering the yard. My 3700' one does OK but it does not have the coverage that my new 3900' one provides. To those of you who tossed your sprinkler in the trash because you said the rubber nozzles wore out, did you not know about Melnor's lifetime warranty on this sprinkler? Save you receipt, or opt for the email version and save it to a special folder, like I have started doing. ;-)
