Can this bracket only be mounted off the top of the scaffolding? Or can it be mounted off any of the ladder rungs as needed?

Asked by: Ed

Customer Reviews

20 in. Side Bracket (4-Pack) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent product, well made, very functional, design could be improved These side brackets are essential for many jobs. They are well made, and allow you to extend the work surface to the side of the scaffold by another 20 inches or so. Ususally this is to get you closer to a wall. I had a different situation-- an obstruction in the center of my scaffold, so I needed to put a platform outside the scaffold to circumvent the obstruction. I wasn't sure if these would allow me to span a standard 19" platform (half inside the scaffold, half outside resting on this bracket) but it worked fine for that. Pro: The quality is excellent and the function is essential for many jobs. Made in Canada. Con: There are some obvious design flaws relating to the retaining pin placement. 1). There is a hole on the bottom bracket for inserting a pin to retain the bracket. There would normally be no load on this pin, so it's just there in case the bracket is bumped, so it doesn't fall off. The distance between holes is too large to accept a normal M-MLG (metaltech) pin. I suppose a 3.5" x 3/8" bolt will work, but tool-free would be nice, and "Is that approved by the manufacturer?" I called Metaltech to verify, but I did not get an answer. It sounds as though an earlier version did not have the hole, so maybe this is optional, but I would like to secure it somehow. 2). If you install the bracket on the side of the scaffold opposite the ladder, it works fine, except for the issue #1 above. If you install it on the ladder side, that hole for the pin is right in line with a rung of the ladder! So inserting a 3/8" bold doesn't work! You either need to bend the bolt, or use something flexible like wire. Again, the issue is "Is that approved by the manufacturer?" Under most situations, this is no big deal, because if you don't bump the bracket, then there is no issue, but I prefer to have it secured! 3). The bracket just "hangs" on the top. That's why I prefer to have the bottom pinned. It can be a little tricky to get the bracket into place after the section above has been installed, but it does work. Maybe this is a good thing, because it makes the bracket stay in place more securely. All in all, I love these brackets, and I would not be without them. If Metaltech is listening, here's how I would fix the design: * Make the bottom bracket about 0.5" lower than it is so there hole has a clean shot on the ladder side. * Provide a hitch pin or clevis pin of the proper length for this hole. These two changes would turn this into an absolute 5-star product.
