This all began as a garage clean-up project. After running out of rooms to remodel, our home improvement contractor started eyeing my garage. My garage had become a black hole were so much miscellaneous stuff that it became completely useless as a work area. For that matter he wasn't even an effective storage area either. So the plan was to start over. He was going to clean it up, spruce it up, and juice it up. He completely gutted the garage and installed new flooring, cabinets, and garage doors. Next he suggested plumbing in compressed air. I had always had a small air compressor around for light jobs. You can never have too much air.
I started to research compressed air units suitable for domestic use and found a wide range of choices. We were looking for the unit that was durable and quiet. It needed enough capacity to run air tools and it needed to run on 110 V. Being potentially portable was also desirable. I researched the more well-known industrial compressors and found that their domestic products were having reliability issues. Some blamed the outsourcing of these models. There were also reliability issues related to the less expensive "house brand" machines. All of this information was confirmed by my contractor. He said he personally has 4 compressors; one for his home shop and 3 portable units. Two of these are made by Mi-T-M and he has never had a problem with them. In fact at one time he bought a âhouse brandâ compressor in a pinch that actually blew up within the first use. Your experience may be different.
Mi-T-M started off making high pressure washers. Soon after they branched out into other products including compressors (this according to their WEB site). These were geared for the professional. They claim all of their products are made in the USA. This compressor may be more expensive than the "house brand" models but I think it's worth it. It is well-made and the fittings are secure. Even hooked up to the shop plumbing it only has to top itself off a few times a day for a few seconds. That means I can leave it on and always have a full air tank when needed. It is quiet enough that I do not hear it in the house unless I am standing next to that wall. You could hear my old $150 portable unit down the street. Iâll keep it around in case I need to put it in the car and take it somewhere. The Mi-T-M is portable but to me that means unhooking it and rolling it to the back yard. It is a heavy beast.
To be honest I have not had the compressor very long and have not had a chance to really give it a workout but I expect to get many trouble-free years of service.
