Customer Questions & Answers

Does one solar panel for the mighty mule dual gate opener charge both gates or just one?

Would the mighty mule fm402 dual gate opener need two different solar panels or can one panel charge the batteries for both sides?
Asked by: wizkit
A 10 watt solar panel would be better for dual gates, but I suppose if you live in a state with plenty of sun like Arizona or New Mexico , and only open the gates a few times a day a 5 watt would be good enough.

does the M.M.FM500 need to be plugged in to 110 always or just when battery needs charging?

Asked by: cj64
You can only have one or the other I believe, You cannot have both 120 volt or solar panel connected at the same time or it will fry the circuit board.

How far can the solar panel be mounted away from the control box (battery). Regular 16 gage wire?

Asked by: BB
Hello BB, Thank you for taking the time to post your question. The Mighty Mule solar panel can be placed up to 250 ft. from the control box using 16 gauge, direct burial, low-voltage wire. Thank you!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Found the best price for this panel at Home Depot... Found the best price for this panel at Home Depot compared to other places like Amazon and tractor supply. It has been working just fine for two weeks. Would have given 5 stars but I had to drill new holes in order to connect the mounting brackets.

This is a little overpriced, but it is high quality and comes with all the parts you need. If the solar panel every gets damaged you can replace it with a cheaper one. I hooked it up to our gate in an area that only gets about 8 hours of direct sunlight per day and it has worked flawlessly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't work Installed product. Gate worked fine until battery drained then nothing. Took forever to realize that the panel was shorted out. Wasted a full day. Purchased a 18watt panel for less money from Lowes. Worked great with the opener. The mighty mule panel is pricey and produces VERY little energy. Maximum wattage the system can accept is 30 watts. Why go with a 5 watt? Cudos to home depot. Brought it into store and was refunded no questions asked.
