What is the amount of force required for the pin to over come the latch part. How hard does the gate have to hit the lock

Asked by: Cjcx3
As "averageJoe" said in his review, there is no force required - the latch mechanism opens a few seconds before the lock enters the receiver bracket. What he didn't say is that it is vital that when the close-cycle completes, the lock "box" is held firmly against the back side of the receiver. If the lock isn't firmly against the stop, an errant wind may blow the slab so that the latch mechanism in the lock box rests on the receiver pin. If there is any pressure on the latch mechanism, it will not open, and as the gate tries to open, the lock box will jam in the receiver. At that point the gate will try to open until either a)it hits the force limit you've set in the control box, or b)the motor rips free of the mounting.

Will it work on a gate that swings out?

I'm looking into purchasing this product, but am concerned that my gate swinging out to open will prove problematic. I'm concerned with having to mount it on the outer side of the gate. If it is on the outside of the gate will that defeat the purpose and make it susceptible to tampering?
Asked by: GirlGoneCountry
Yes. My gates open out. I did two things. I purchased locks for the pins that hold the "arms" in place. I also purchased a gate lock with my system. Even if they got the "arms" loose, you still are not going to get the gates open!

The item works, and if you need it (because your gate is too wide to be held closed by the motor alone; I'm not going to consider here those people who are buying it for reason of security), you are simply going to have to buy it. That being said, it has multiple design flaws, including: 1) If the gate puts any load on the catch mechanism "tongue" (for instance, because a prevailing wind is pushing on the gate "slab"), the catch will not open and the gate will jam. 2) The gate must remain perfectly aligned with the receiver, since the flare at the ends of the receiver is only a few degrees, and there is no wheel or low-friction pad to ease the mating of the lock with the receiver. All slabs sag, especially if you need to hang them so they don't contact the receiver at all, so you have to be constantly adjusting the receiver for the ever-increasing sag. 3) The pin is secured in place with a friction-fit cap - hard to put on, hard to remove for adjustments, but easy enough to remove by someone bent on defeating the security feature of the lock. Ultimately I designed a wheel and ramp mechanism, which I bolted to the gatepost and slab to guide the gate into the receiver, prevent the lock from rubbing on the receiver, and coincidentally supporting the slab whenever the gate is closed. And I have adjusted the geometry so that the slab is pulled hard against the stop, so no wind is going to push it against the "tongue" of the lock. And I simply left the cap off the pin the last time I had to remove it to modify the mounting of the receiver.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Works some time. Gate Lock Installed the lock and works 80%. The lock hangs up on the pivot pin and does not release placing the gates in a bind and then causes the opener to close. If the lock would work better at release would be OK. Now we just use it for a stop for the gate.

I didn’t have to use the lock control board and extra wires because my gate opener was plug and play ready. Installed in 20 minutes, good to go. Make sure you position it proper before you drill.

On some gates systems it energizes the lock the entire time the gate is moving which can burn out the solenod. These systems need the addition of a time relay to control the time the lock solenod is pulled in.
