Answer:
The battery is the main power supply. I bought the small battery that Home Depot sells for the heavy duty model and it seems to be working well. The gate is opened and closed about 8 times a day without any hesitation.

Yes I bought a car battary and placed it in a weather proof box and burried it near the opener, If I would have not burried it would have been stolen by now.

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Mighty Mule. You will need to purchase a 12-Volt Automotive or Marine battery for the gate operator. You can keep the battery charged by electric (through the included transformer) or solar power (which can be purchased separately). If you have any further questions, please contact Mighty Mule technical support: 1-800-543-1236.

Answer:
Yes you can extend the battary wire, make sure you use at least 16 gauge wire, I used 14 gauge to make sure that there was not loss of voltage.

Answer:
no. if I remember correctly you're limited to 15 feet from the battery to the opener. DC voltage is much more limited in terms of wire distance run than AC voltage. I'm guessing the design requires no more than the 15 foot distance due to the fact that the battery operates and is charged from the electronics in the opener.

I don't see why not. Electricity runs through wire no matter if it's one foot or 300 feet.

Answer:
I have one opener that mounts to a 6x6 with only an inch from the neighbor's building. So from the center line of the hinge I have a total or 8" and it works fine. With a little design change I'm sure you could reduce that clearance to 6".

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really Nice Gate Opener Easy to install and has many excellent features and optional accessories. I liked it so much, I got one for my pasture gate. It made my horses happy, I wonder if they liked as much as me.......lol. December 10, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Priced competitively/not waterproof This is my third time purchasing this product...not because I love it but because it's somewhat affordable. The problem with this product is that if water gets into the memory board (which eventually it does) it short circuits and dies out. There are other products on the market which are under commercial grade and cost 3x's the amount of this one. Long-term I would go with a commercial graded product instead. March 25, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Stay away - manually opening your gate is less frustrating After installation, gate worked great for a short time (30 days) after that it has been a constant stream of issues. The biggest is that it is constantly beeping low battery. I have changed the battery several times and charged it. It continues to beep all day after you drive away so you have to sit waiting for it to start beeping and ensure you shut if off (about 70% of the time) or the neighbors will kill you. Trying to call customer support is a joke. If it does not ring busy, they keep you on hold with happy messages for 30 minutes then hang up. I guess the call volume is higher than they can manage. Buy something else. I am trying to return mine. June 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great gate opener This is my 3rd Mighty Mule Gate Opener. The first one I had for years and wore out. The 2nd one was forced open during an emergency situation and I didn't know it so when I tried to close it burned up the motor. My 3rd is doing great. We programmed it where it stay open until we manually close it. This works much better for us. Mighty Mule is a great product. I was lucky to have a talented son-in-law who installed it for me. He hooked it up to electricity so we don't have to bother with replacing batteries. August 11, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by unreliable Do not buy this unit if you are expecting reliability. The gate opener requires constant adjustment in order to maintain proper gate closure, the range of the transmitters varies by day, and the opener simply does not work in cold weather. When you contact GTO tech support their first reaction is to blame you for improper installation or a faulty battery. I am not happy with that mentality and do not think too much of a company that is not inerested in customer satisfaction. March 6, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disaster My experience with Mighty Mule has not proven to be very mighty. I could not install it myself, being an old lady with a worn out body, so I had to have a professional install it. According to the information provided by the company, you do not need an electrician. That is not true unless you have power to the gate already or can use solar. There was no mention that a battery was required. I was unaware I needed a battery, waterproof box, and adapters for low voltage wire. That cost me an additional $107. After finally getting it installed, the first time we had wind, it blew the gate open and it would not close. I had to have the electrician back to reset it. As soon as we had wind again, I had the same problem. Unfortunately, there is no information stating that you must put a lock on it to keep the wind from affecting it. The lock was about $200 more. I finally decided I did not want any product that was so sensitive and would have to be reset repeatedly. I returned it and got my money back. I now have a professionally installed gate opener that has given me no trouble whatsoever! In my opinion, this is a product that is just not worth all the trouble required to keep it working. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mighty Mule Gate opener I have installed the Mighty Mule gate opener and it works great. Installation was straightforward and easily done. There was a place or two that the instructions could have been a little clearer. April 8, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by You get what you pay for People complaining that the product doesn't last have probably used an undersized model and are overworking their motor. I've had the same opener for 6 years. It finally gave out, but for $300 I'm buying another. Better gate openers can run over $1,000 and I just don't have that kind of cheddar lying around right now. I was headed to the Depot this afternoon, but none are in stock. As far as weatherproof... it says clearly right on the opener to mount upside down. I've never had water issues and this opener has endured a hurricane and several tropical storms. My only complaint is, they are noisy. But I don't mind because I can hear any time my gardeners or pool keepers show up. And when the kids get older.... November 17, 2013
