Customer Questions & Answers

We have this floor installed floating two years ago and it is still making noise when we walk over it. Is this a product or installation defect?

We were never told that this would happen. The person who installed it says it is normal on this type of floors. I cannot believe that in that case the manufacturer does not advise clients for this problem. We are considering to have it reinstalled glue-down.

I doubt its a product defect, from what I can tell the wood is of excellent quality, I suspect its peculiar to your installation. If you re hearing creaks, the boards may have not been tightly joined during installation (always tap the edges with a setting block to ensure a good fit). If you are hearing a booming sound, the underlay may not be doing a good job (too thin or not enough sound insulation properties).

Is there built in cork sound proofing or is that as pirate purchase? If so what types and rating are suggested

There is no attached underlayment. Any underlayment designed for use under hardwood/laminate floating floors is suitable for use.

What is the IIC rating on this floor?

Asked by: Liz
There is no IIC rating for the hardwood itself. Your sound rating will be determined by the underlay pad used beneath the floor. Home Depot has a large selection of underlayments for floating floors with varied sound ratings, depending on your needs. Your store associate can further advise you on all of your options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from beautiful Didn't have any reviews to go by, saw the sample in HD and liked the color and grain. Was not interested in a "busy" looking floor. The grain is simple not many knots, color and grain pretty uniformed. It has a nice rich dark brown color, brown shows as brown and not red. Just getting started on installation and the person we have doing it has said its pretty easy, easy than other floors he installed. Do not go by the color on line, looks nothing like it. Best is to see it in the store, but not all HD has it in their display area. I took more than 1 of their small samples to get a better look at it at home in different lighting.. Arrived at the store for pick up 1 week earlier than schedueled. This is a click install floor, you will need a foam padding underneath, no nailing needed. It's thin and light but durable. No scratches so far..Very pleased with this purchased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great look and quality If you like the look of natural wood, this is an excellent product. Like all natural wood products, beware that within a box, or even across several boxes, there may or may not be some darker pieces. If you want a random look with a few dark interspersed with the more numerous lighter pieces, make sure you open at least six boxes and scout them all out. I've found only two poor quality planks in two pallets worth, so overall quality is quite high in my sampling. Assembly was painless, although plan to tap the edges with a setting block on every joint. Overall, very impressed with this product, and will continue to do all rooms in my house using it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's not bad First, I installed this myself. Something I have never done before. But I'm a pretty handy guy and the install was straight forward. After the first room was finished I found that there was snapping and popping at some of the end joints. The installation method is very simple so I don't see how I could have caused it. I have seen comments indicating this is due to using warped boards. And I certainly did use warped boards. However, the Millstead instructions state there is nothing wrong with them and they should be used, so I did. I estimate 30% of the boards were warped so I kinda had to use them. But with the number of warped boards, and the number of noisy end joints (20 or 30 in 900 sqft), it really doesn't seem to be the problem. Its more like the end joints weren't cut exactly right and and some just don't fit together properly, causing them to snap when walked on. For the cost of this wood, I expected better. It's certainly beautiful and the install was easy. I just hope I can find a way to fix the snaps. I installed over a plywood subfloor with a foam underlay. Definately get an oscillating saw to cut the door jambs. I picked one up for $40 and it was a lifesaver. It also came in handy for cleaning up some of the old wood underlayment I had to remove. And make sure you get the right stairnose if you need one. They make two styles. One to mate with the side of the boards, and one to overhang on the ends of the boards. :) Overestimating your quantity by 10% worked very well for me. I tried to keep scrap to a minimum and still lost about 10%. Also note that these are random length boards. While the majority are full length (about 46"), there are various sized boards included, as well as boards dedicated for use on the left end or right end only. The variance isn't bad at all, but now that it's done, I wish had sorted all the boards by color so that I could have controlled the color changes instead of the random method. It's not super hard so it will scratch and dent. But it cleans up nice. To sum up, it looks great, we really like it, the install was easy, but the snapping is annoying.
