If the gap is not provided the floor could make noise when it rubs against the walls. Also, a good underlayment material needs to be put down beneath the flooring, between the boards and the sub flooring. The underlayment will also ensure there is no noise when the floor "floats". One other possible source of a squeaking noise could be the sub floor itself, it may have been making noise which was not as noticeable underneath the previous flooring especially if carpet is being replaced by wood flooring. If the sub flooring is squeaking it can be fixed by adding screws or glue before the wood flooring is placed on top of it. Read Less

I completed my installation yesterday and have zero "squeaking." I did have one or two "pops" that I assume were boards just fininishing the snap-together process. It has not occured again.

This is rather unusual. Could be a couple of things. Usually time will settle the wood in to its "comfortabe" spot and it will stop. It's possible that the wood plank is right up against the wall. If there is weakness in the floor or your underlayment is spongy the wood can scrape against the wall when stepped on. Or simply your subfloor was not sturdy to start with. Answer:
Noise in floating floors is most often related to movement due to improperly flattened subfloors. Subfloors should be flat to 3/16" per 8' radius.

Answer:
Any underlay designed for floating hardwood/laminate installations is suitable. Home Depot has several options available, and your local store can advise you on the pros/cons of each.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Extremely pleased The floor has only been down for a week or so, so it is hard to give 5 stars for quality and value, but if it holds up as it has, they would be 5 stars too. Installation was a breeze and this was my first floor, I am a novice DYI. I did find a kit at the other big box store that had a rubber block for knocking the boards into place, as well as spacers, and a bar with a lip for tight installations-couldnt have done the installation without these items. Looks incredible, LOVE the variations in colors, I pulled from multiple boxes as others have said. Purchased a table saw (Dewalt), already had a chop saw and jig saw. -These items are essential. Got a dewalt multi-tool for Christmas, that was a huge help with door frames and such. My kitchen floor was not level though, we are on a concrete slab, had to put two 50lb bags of level quik to get the floor a bit more level, probably could have used two more bags, but I was afraid of raising the floor too much for the D/W and Fridge-wanted to ensure they were able to come out of their respective cabinets. Highly recommened this MADE in USA product! Tried, Lowes, and Lumber Liq, so glad I went with HD! January 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good product, reasonably priced This is the second floating wood floor I've installed. This product was a little bit harder to install than the previous one (thomasville), more pressure and care required to get the boards to click together. The finished installation looks great; seams are tight and the overall finish is very nice. Floor is very flat and relatively quiet when walked on. Very little warping on the boards and any warp disappeared when clicked in place. Highly recommend spending extra for the AirGuard 3-in-1 underlayment; makes the installation much quieter. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A little difficult to install but looks great This flooring has great color and having varying lengths helped with less waste. I ordered six boxes and some pieces in all the boxes were bowed which made it much harder to click together. The paper work said it was ok to use pieces as they were not manufacturing errors. Once you get several rows done and place weights on floor, the floor will look great. I ordered 10 percent extra but should have ordered 20. Waiting on another box as I was three boards short. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hickory Click Engineered Flooring Very happy with this product. It is very nice looking and is just as advertized. Laying the floor is straight-forward. December 30, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst floor ever I bought and installed this floor 2 1/2 years ago and noticed problems with it within just 2-3 Months (it was splitting and almost half of the edges of the boards literally were splintering) I tried to no avail to get the company to stand by their warranty and all they kept telling me was to contact Home Depot but they were no help, all they would say was I had to contact the manufacturer. I am so disappointed in this floor as soon as I can afford to I will be replacing it. September 28, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Looks good Ordered one box and loved it, so we ordered what we needed to do the family room. First box was mostly full length boards with some shorter ones mixed in to give a nice look. The large order was a different story. Mostly short boards (mostly 2 footers). Floor still looks good, but would have preferred more full lenght boards. July 28, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Extremely sensitive to water, finish is very delicate, you get what you pay for We have had it installed for a little over one year. An unnoticed dropped ice cube, or leaking sippy cup and in 15 minutes or so the grain raises up permanently damaged. The finish warranty doesn't stand behind this sort of thing. Our old floor had no problem with this sort of thing. The sub floor also has to be perfect or you will feel it. Our older engineered hardwood floor was almost twice as thick and felt nailed down. This moves/flexes when you walk across it. On the plus side it is beautiful. I would only recommend it for a household without kids or pets. February 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Tarkett Wood Flooring Rocks This real wood is gorgeous and very well made. Probably one of the best engineered real wood floors I have seen and is easy to install as long as you respect how tightly the locking edges should be fitted in order for it to get a good "snap". The color varies from dark chocolate to very blond "maple" and the boxes are randomly packed with mostly long lengths to very mixed lengths of longs and various shorter lengths, so it is best to open a number of boxes at any time in order to keep the randomness of the colors and lengths. Very good quality, hardness & color - I highly recommend this product to anyone interested in real wood planking! December 8, 2010
