Customer Questions & Answers

Is this flooring supposed to creak when walking on?

Asked by: Leee
No it should not. We used the premium underlayment and have been very disappointed with this product. It is too weak and flexes too much which causes the squeaking. The last flooring I had used was glued as each piece was installed this worked out great. That floor was 1/2" with an 1/8" wear layer. This Vintage Maple product is 3/8" with a 1/16" wear layer. We were fooled by the look of the wood which is nice but that is where it ends. This product is not suitable for flooring.

I need to know if this wood needs to be tapped into place or simply layed down.

The row you are working on always seems to stick up on the long edge and does not lay flat, will additional rows pull the wood flat. Is there a suggested tool or hardware that will help with the installation.
Asked by: Anonymous
It takes a light tap. I used a 4x4 block to tap into groove and then to seat good.

can black felt paper be used as underlayment between subfloor and this engineered hardwood

Asked by: Doug
I would not use an underlayment made for a roof on my floor. These floors are made to have some cushion underneath which helps when the floor floats over high/low areas that have not been sorted out with floor leveling products. The felt paper would not be enough cushion. I had used the plastic air entrained underlayment and that worked great for the fourteen years we lived in our last house. That said I would never use this Vintage Maple flooring again after our experience. This flooring scratches so easily you would not believe it. It will pit and dent just from putting a chair on it. We put felt pads under all of our chairs yet we still experienced some pitting which really looks bad. I am looking into to trying to finish over these places but the veneer is so thin you could easily sand thru it in a second. If I come across a way to safely finish these problems areas I will post it. In the mean time look for another company and product. This product is poorly made and should not be used on a floor anywhere. Don't be fooled by the "hardness rating" it is for the wood species not the product made with it. Fortunately this is not the case for all engineered products. If I could have found the flooring we had used in our last house I would have used it in this new one and saved myself money and aggravation.

how red is this floor?

I am considering it as a first option but I want to make sure it doesn't have a red/orange feel to it, but rather a warmth to the wood tone.
Asked by: michael
Did not notice any red in this wood color. It looks medium dark at a distance, but standing upon the floor it appears lighter in color. Some boards are a bit darker than others, another reason to mix the boxes upon installing for a clean natural finish.

Oak Mink 3/8 in. Thick x 4-1/4 in. Wide x Random Length Engineered Hardwood Flooring (20 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 68.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Went down nice and looks great Floor went down nice but at first was having trouble locking the boards together. But if you take a cut off peace about six inches wide and put the groove side on a 45 degree angle into the groove side of the floor and tap with a hammer they pop right into place. After that the flooring went in perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Millstead 3/8 x 3 1/4 flooring This is a quality flooring product that was simple to install. We installed it in a basement using the AirGuard Microban underlayment. Both products worked well together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great floor This flooring worked out really well. It has a very good finish and is easy to install. I measured the area to be covered at 101 sq ft. So, based on the specification of 20 sq ft per box, I purchased 6 boxes. It turned out that each box contained 22 sq ft and I only needed 5 boxes. I returned the unopened box with no problems. If you use this product, you will need a good rubber mallet and taping block, along with a good pull bar (do NOT buy the flooring installation kit as I did. It is poorly designed and cheaply made. Ger the Roberts Pro pull bar and tapping block instead.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome flooring We bought this to cover 300 sq ft in a combo living/dining room. We used 13 boxes (with almost the whole box left over in the last box). We had a lot of diagonal cuts at the end, which used up more boards. My husband installed it and said it was "beautiful" as far as installation goes. It was tight-fitting, but this is what you want, he said. He did use his tapping block the whole time to fit the pieces in. I think there are 16 boards per case (14 or 16?). There are 22.5 sq ft per case, which is different than what Home Depot advertises in the description (they say 20? sq ft). We did this floor in about 2 full days of working. If we didn't have all the cuts at the diagonal, we would've done it faster. The boards of this maple flooring are definitely not consistent in color. Some boards are lighter with a different pattern, some are darker and quite rustic-looking. If you want a consistent, uniform floor that looks like the same color and pattern in each board, DO NOT BUY THIS FLOORING! We, however, did not want the consistent look throughout. We like the variation. It gives the room character. I'm attaching a pic of our room. We installed some Dupont walnut laminate in our old home (also sold by HD), and I like this maple flooring so much better. It looks so much more authentic (although we liked the walnut a lot, too).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value and easy to install I looked for a while before selecting this hardwood. We were putting over concrete and so needed engineered wood. The price, hardness rating, 50 yr warranty, and ability to float or glue combined with the mid to dark tone is what sold us on this product. Free delivery by Home Depot was nice too. We glued some around foyer and doors, and floated the rest. Definitely firmer with glue, but is more costly for supplies and labor. The float portion is fine and feels more like normal walking over wood would feel. The click lock is tight, but we soon learned you have to tap it in slightly before it lays flat. problem with the transition pieces is you can't buy them online at Homedepot so I had to go to store and it took 2 weeks to arrive. We have a dog, and he doesn't scratch the wood at all. need to put felt under everything though for furniture I hired someone at $2/FT and recommend to do that if you use glue. Lot of back breaking work that I avoided was definitely worth it. can't go wrong with this product. I laid approx 1000 sq ft for under $7k with wood, supplies and labor
