Should the flooring acclimate before installation?

The installation guide talks a little about acclimating the floor. I've read that it is not good to put the flooring in the space where it will be installed and wait 5-7 days because it can do harm to the wood.

In the intallation guide Page 1 section II (Preperation) it states:
The wood subflooring materials must not exceed 13% moisture content. Using a reliable wood moisture meter, measure and document the moisture content of both the subfloor and the hardwood flooring to determine proper moisture content. The difference between the moisture content of the wood subfloor and the wood flooring must not exceed 4% (3% for plank). Acclimate the hardwood flooring on or off the job, as necessary, to meet these requirements.
If I am in a home that is temperature controlled and was built more than a decade ago should I stage the flooring in the space I intend to install it in? If so for how long?

I do not have a wood moisture meter. Is this required? If so which one is "reliable"?

Answer:
The wood should be acclimated in the area it will be installed in or in an environment consistent with the area of installation. The only way to insure that the wood has reached a suitable moisture content (within 4% of subfloor for boards up to 3", within 2% of floor for boards wider than 3") is to use a moisture meter. I've been finding a lot of conflicting information about if a vapor barrier should be used on a plywood subfloor. This subfloor sits above a finished basement and a concrete crawl space. I've looked in the products installation instructions too and it is vague and almost conflicting.

Should I use a vapor barrier? If so which one?

Answer:
For 3/4" solid wood installations, it is recommended to install 15# asphalt saturated felt paper (or similar product) over the subfloor as a vapor retardant. For installations over crawlspaces, the floor of the crawlspace itself should additionally be covered with an impervious moisture barrier such as 6mil polyethylene sheeting.

Customer Reviews

Rated 2.3 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad experience, poor quality After having waited for four weeks after ordering our Maple Latte solid hardwood floor, the installers came to build it in. After two hours of work the installer called me to have a look. At first everything looked fine to me. But then he said, "Sorry Madame, I can't go on. The quality is so poor. I can't build this in." Then he showed me what I had not seen in the first place: 1/8'' differences in height, dangerous traps to trip up on. Uneven cut planks, fitting together on one end, but gaps of also about 1/8'' on the other end. So the wood had to be replaced. After another four weekds of waiting for the new delivery, finally the floor was supposed to be built in. The installers came on time. They didn't even try to build it in. They just stuck it together and showed me: the same problems, differences in height and differences in width. He again said, "I cannot build this in. This week I lost three days of work, because the quality was so poor.” I can only just warn all customers to buy Maple Latte manufactured by Millstead. We were happy that Home Depot allowed us to denounce our contract. August 29, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great quality wood flooring I've only purchased one bundle for color matching purposes but I am very impressed with the color uniformity, clear blemish free planks, good selection of cut lengths with plenty of longer planks. All the planks are very straight, fit very well together with no gaps or twists. I predict there will be little to no loss during installation. I have no wear observations at this time until it have been down for awhile. Only issue was the UPS shipping package was a bit damaged but none of the boards were damaged. I am ordering 30 more bundles. I also ordered a piece of stair nosing and it matches color and is the same high quality. January 22, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Questionable product We ordered 22 boxes of the product. Because it is the best color match to the trim of our house. This is an inferior product. 20 to 25% of the boards were warped. It took our contractor at least three extra days to install the floor because he had a tough time getting the boards to fit together and also to sort out the bad pieces. We also were very stressed out because for a while we were not sure if we should continue with the product or to switch to a different product and become more delayed. Home Depot did give us about a 20% discount. Certainly expect a better product for the price. The wood also turned out to be softer and more easily dented and scratched than expected, even though it's is supposed to have a 50 year guarantee. When we made the decision to buy this product, there were two review. One was very positive. The other stated that the boards were warped and unusable. We decided to take a chance, as we really like the color. This is why we wanted to share our opinion so others can be more informed. September 9, 2014
