Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used on a Drill?

I am looking to clear out the end of a 4" drain pipe that has some ice build-up. Ideally, i would like this mounted on a 12-16" shaft in order to get up the pipe a bit. Currently, I use a 16' paddle bit to chip away at the ice but this has been putting some good size knicks in the pipe.. Thanks for any input!
Asked by: MusicJock
No, not as it is out of the package. You must have a grinder or you may be able to buy a mandrel adapter for the drill.

Will it prep wood for paint?

Asked by: Rex
You may be able to use it on hardwoods but on softer wood, i.e.: Poplar or Pine, it will shred this wood. The knotted wire is very strong and will likely hold up as well against the wood as it does on ferrous metal.

I had 4 steel wheels to do, 2 of which were so scaled and rusted from being under the truck and holding salt etc. thought they would never come clean. The brush with separate adapter needed to fit 4" grinder worked fantastic. After plenty of time on 4 rims, then battery box in a Kubota tractor, then snow blower housing hardly any wear at all. GREAT but being small the seller should know it will be used on a 4" grinder as such come with adapter sold separately.

It's small enough to get into most corners, yet big enough to clean up larger areas without taking hours. Be sure to remember your safety glasses or face shield, and a jacket/apron as an occasional wire may fly off. Twisted wire style lasts much longer than the usual cup brush with straight wires. If your grinder or drill has a handle, use it for safety and control.

Extremely easy to install and remove from grinder. This wire brush did a fantastic job of prepping for the finishing brush and paint. I highly recommend this if you have a metal surface to prepare for painting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Took Behr paint off of the concrete street.... it only lasted 7-10 minutes. At $20 it is Kinda costly. If I was to use this on anything else I'm sure it would last a lot longer.

I purchased the 3-inch brush to use on a Milwaukee angle grinder, model 6141-30. I should note that I’m not a metal worker (professional or otherwise); rather I’m a DIY home owner and my review is from that standpoint. YMMV. The grinder is rated for 12,000 RPM and the 3-inch brush is similarly rated. It is critical, when using an angle grinder, not to use attachments which are not rated at a high enough speed. At 12,000 RPM things tend to disintegrate quickly if not properly designed and manufactured. There is a safety notice on the brush packaging noting that proper protection must be worn, including a respirator under some conditions. I use safety glasses and a full-face shield as well as heavy leather gloves. Wires tend to come loose on wire wheels mounted on angle grinders and can go deeper than one might expect into one’s hands. Of course, the guard was in place on the angle grinder when using the cup brush. The 3-inch brush mounted easily on the 6141-30 grinder (see photos) and dismounted as easily. I tested the unit on a metal door that needs refinishing; I wasn’t grinding down the metal per se, but rather getting the old finish off. This 3-inch brush on an angle grinder beat my old wire brush setup on a ½” drill hands down. Of course, a flat wire wheel is also used for such work as well as sanding disks. The cup design gets into cracks and crevices that the other attachments don’t do as well on – but make certain that the work piece is secured! The cup can grab the work and send it flying off. I didn’t have to “lean into” the grinder to get the job done, but you must maintain a good grip on the grinder and enough pressure so that the brush doesn’t go skittering off the work. Milwaukee notes that the product “is meant for cleaning castings, structural steel, and sheet metal”. The doors I’m working aren’t sheet metal, of course, but the principle seems to be the same – at any rate the brush worked on my application. On wood doors, probably not so much – Milwaukee can’t (or won’t) guarantee this product for that application. I have two doors left to do (and probably won’t finish before winter sets in) but from the admittedly limited workout I’ve given the Milwaukee 3-inch cup brush I don’t think I’ll wear it out before the jobs are completed. Not a tool that, as a DIY, I will use every day but one that I’m glad to have in my kit. HTH Regards, Jim

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressed I'll admit it - wire wheels and cups scare the heck out of me. I've avoided using one for years primarily because of horror stories I've heard about these things grabbing work and slinging it across the room or into a body part, or stories of the wheels' wire ended up embedded in body parts. Scary stuff! But I do blacksmithing in my spare time and needed a better way to deal with scale removal on larger items. So I trotted myself down to the HD and gave this one a try. I have to say, I"m terribly impressed. First, I have used this quite a bit and have yet to have the first piece of wire sling off of it. Second, it does a terrific job, takes de-scaling a piece from a long job on a grinder/polisher to a couple of minutes at the MOST with this mounted on my hand grinder. Third, it is so far extremely durable, I inspected the thing just last night and it's difficult to even tell it's been used, there is a little bit of bending in of the face wires, but that's barely noticeable - the twists are intact and look like they looked when I bought it. An added bonus, BTW, it imparts an every so slight hammered texture to the steel, which I find I REALLY like - if I could figure out a way to use this on very small items I would, I like the texture so much I prefer it now. I honestly can't imagine having to replace this anytime soon, but if I ever do, I will be right back to HD to buy the same one.
