Why is Milwaukee Fastback II Flip Utility Knife not available in New York?

Cant be shipped to NY and not in any stores. Is it considered a switch blade and illegal?
Asked by: Mike
Without actually knowing, I'd bet that New York classifies it as a "switchblade" or "gravity knife." I have to admit it produces a satisfying SNAP! when you open it with a flick of your wrist. Too bad it's outlawed, because it's one of the best utility knives on the market, IMHO.

My previous utility knife has not been up to the task. The blade keeps coming out of the sliding blade holder every time I try to make a heavy cut in drywall. It had to go. Found this Fastback Flip knife and it's great. This is heavy duty and feels great in the hand. I love the flip out blade. It can lock into either of two positions. And it has blade storage. Also has a wire cutter, belt clip and lanyard hole. This knife cost about 3 times more than the el-cheapo utility knife I had been using but it's at least 100 times better. Totally worth it.

It has convenient one-handed opening by just pressing the button and flicking your wrist. The blade locks into 2 different positions (straight and about 45 degrees). It has a wire stripper and a hook opening for cutting cord/rope without opening the blade. There is a hole for a lanyard or hanging and a belt clip. It can also hold 4 replacement blades. I found it very simple/easy to change the blades.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is the best one i've had so far I have been using utility knives for about 20 years now and so far this is the best one i've had. The one I have right now has served me for a few years of almost daily use and is still a good knife but the clip broke so I have to look for another one. Definitely worth it!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fragile Blade Holder I took this knife - brand new - to Mexico on a build we were doing in Juarez. I was excited to have a decent knife for cutting buffalo board, drywall, stripping wires etc - unfortunately for me, as soon as we started cutting the buffalo board it was clear the blade holding mechanism was going to be an issue. Continuously, the blade lodged itself into the buffalo board and VERY easily pulled right out of the knife. If I wiggled the knife wrong the blade would fall out. In general this design seems like the weakest link, if the blade won't stay in, it doesn't do much good. Maybe I got a bad one, but even if it worked for a while, there are much more robust blade lock designs that seem like they'll stand the test of time better (Greenlee, and Bessey Knives for example). I wanted to like this knife as I respect the Milwaukee brand alot, but this is one is a dud.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My current choice electrical knife I put in extensive research into each and every tool I buy. This is the knife I am using for all of my electrical work. It works lightning fast one hand operation with some practice and I have never cut myself in over a year of continuous (20-150 times a day) use with the Fastbacks (I and then II) I use this knife on everything from stripping wire, to detail work on drywall, to extracting slivers. For 3 wire, use it like a hawkbill. There are no hawkbills that can do what this knife can do - even the milwaukee one, so until there is, this is still the best knife.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't beat the one-handed operation I've owned many many utility knives in my life. The retractable blade was the first big innovation allowing for safe storage and one-handed opening. The problem was after extended use with dry wall the blade would become encrusted and refuse to retract. Then, somebody invented the folding utility knife which was safe and convenient but it required two hands to get it open. Enter Milwaukee. Press the button and flick your wrist and it's ready to work. I especially like the belt clip which easily secures to the pocket in a pair of jeans. I'm sold. I think this is the best design on the market.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Clip works great as a pocket clip, no problems. Bounce-back on open is annoying. Bought this knife a couple months ago, and I still can't open it cleanly 100% of the time: the blade bounces back about half the time when opening one-handed. The button has to be released precisely when lock is engages. Mess up the timing, and the blade swings back. The clip works great in the pocket, not on belt. Weight of knife is a bit heavy. I am considering grinding off some of the excess die-cast material from the handle to slim it down and lighten it up. Will post before & after pics if I do. Can't beat the super-solid quality overall. Heavy and sturdy, feels solid in hand. The finger notch works great and gives confidence: no slipping even if wet or slimy. String cutter feature is cool and actually useful. Wire stripper works well but keeping fingers away from the blade means you want to use it only for one-off or emergency situations, not everyday wire stripping. I like this knife. I am still working on deploying it cleanly every time (and closing it without the bounce-back issue too!). I have cut a lot of cardboard and heavy rubber material with NO issues of the blade coming out. That would be a deal breaker, but this one keeps its blade, no problem. The extra blade holder is a little bit cutesie and adds a lot of width to the body of the knife. Seems a bit than necessary, or could hold 2 - 3 blades in the same amount of space. A slimmer, lighter version that is still solid and opens & closes without bouncing back would be great. Hopefully Milwaukee designers are already planning revisions for the Fastback III.
