Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by joshinbaltimore In response to the review titled "Disappointing" - you had the tool stuck in between gears!
I have one of these and love it except that I got a nick in the blade and now it just shatters pipe. I need a new blade.
For the person who posted a review titled "Disappointing", if the tool makes those clicking sounds, the tool is in between forward and reverse gears. I have had that happen many times. Under normal use, you apply power in the cutting (blade closing) direction and once the pipe is cut, you push the button to let the blade spring open. However, if you get the tool stuck or need to back out of a cut, you can select a switch that is on the side of the tool opposite from the trigger to reverse the powered direction of the cut. Sometimes, the tool gets stuck in between and you just need to fiddle with it a little.
I have also had this happen when I used the spring release of the blade and the cutting gear ratchet just didn't quite catch on the next cut. Just wiggle the blade.
When this tool is working right, it will cut up to 2" schedule 40 and schedule 80. It has plenty of power. BE FOREWARNED, YOU SHOULD USE SAFETY GLASSES WHEN OPERATING THIS TOOL. PVC PIPE DOES NOT BEND OR FOLD AS YOU MIGHT THINK THAT PLASTIC WOULD - IT SHATTERS CATASTROPHICALLY. THIS IS THE SAME REASON THAT YOU MUST NOT USE PVC FOR COMPRESSED AIR, IT IS ACTUALLY MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN USING METAL PIPE ALTHOUGH THAT MAY SEEM COUNTER-INTUITIVE. IF YOU USE THIS TOOL TO CUT LESS THAN AN INCH OFF THE END OF A PVC PIPE, YOU WILL GET ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH AND THEN SHARP PIECES OF PVC WILL SHATTER VIOLENTLY FROM THE TOOL.
Just a heads up!! You have plenty of fingers to loose, but you need both eyes!!

I was working on a building project where I needed to cut a lot of 1-1/2 inch PVC. I had been using traditional methods of hack saw, skill saw, hand cutters and chop saw. The hack saw was hard to keep straight and get a pure edge, the hand cutters would not cut straight on 1-1/2 inch pipe and the electric saws worked but the shavings made a mess and were hard to clean up. I was a skeptic when I saw this tool but decided to purchase based on reading the reviews. What a great tool - easily cuts 1-1/2 Schedule 40 PVC straight with no shavings every time!

I purchased this PVC cutter for my dad as a gift. Unfortunately, either the one he received was faulty, or this just isn't strong enough to actually cut through normal PVC pipe. From what he told me, the cutter begins to close, and then just clicks, and doesn't ratchet closed all of the way. Fortunately he was able to return it to the local home depot with no hassle. It's too bad, this seems like a great idea...

I was using a mitre saw as I make hundreds of cuts every couple of weeks. What a mess that was. Yay, no more hours cleaning my shop.

Where was this tool when I redid all the drains and vents in a 3bed/2bath house? I bought it to fabricate a pvc framed organic greenhouse as I did not want pvc cuttings all over...
Pros: Measure, mark, cut and install. Simple and fast. No mess. While it does deform smaller pipe during the cut, the deformation is not permanent and joints fit perfect - this project used 2", 1 1/4" and 3/4" sch40.
Cons: took some practice to get a reliability square cut on the smaller pipe. And the trigger safety is in an odd place given I have big hands but short fingers... found I had a hard time getting a good grip on it for the first 50 or so cuts. Also wish it was corded, as I won't use it often enough to cycle the battery enough to keep it fresh.

Wow, I am glad I took a chance on this cutter, it is a little pricey but worth the money. So far so good, I used it to but pcv pipes for a koi pond at home. Never look back on the hand saw to cut those pipes.
