Does the XC battery allow tools to operate at higher torque?

This question is from M12 12-Volt Lithium-Ion XC 4 Ah Extended Capacity Battery

I asked a similar question previously and I believe my meaning was misunderstood. Obviously a 4.0 Ah battery will have twice the energy storage capacity of a 2.0 Ah battery.

I'm interested in knowing if the XC batteries can discharge more electrical current at a higher rate than the compact batteries, resulting in a higher maximum power achieved for the tool using it. This should be possible because the XC batteries have more individual cells connected in parallel, and therefore can safely discharge current at a higher rate without overheating.

So if I buy a Milwaukee tool like the new M12 Circular saw and only have M12 2.0 Ah compact batteries, will the torque and power output be less than if I bought an M12 4.0 Ah XC battery? If this is the case, are the electronics regulating current draw located in the tool or in the battery? Are there certain M12 tools that utilize this capability, and some that don't?

Sorry for writing an essay with multiple questions, but all these factors can impact my buying decisions and how I'll use my tools, and I can't find a definitive answer anywhere.

Answer:
I tested this 4 Ah battery vs. the 1.5 Ah battery, and the answer appears to be YES. Tools I used were the M12 FUEL circular saw, and the M12 FUEL 1/4" impact driver. You can see more details in my review and attached video.

Answer:
The XC battery does not allow for tools to operate at higher torque. The tool will operate at it's maximum torque no matter which battery is being used. The XC battery allows for you to use the tool longer as your battery has a higher capacity.

I just bought a hackzall with a rounded base battery (2.0 ah?) and a charger. My question is, is XC 4 AH compatible with my charger & hackzall?

Answer:
Definitely, I found my hackzall lying in the roadway. It has the XC 4 AH battery in it, and works great! Good thing it's fully charged, since I don't yet own a charger. Finders keepers!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great ! It gives the M12 impact driver more power and the run time is outstanding . Milwaukee is the way to go. I had Craftsman cordless tools for 20 years , until 2 years ago and gave all of them to my son and have been with Milwaukee . March 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Battery Awesome power and this battery lasts! Milwaukee has awesome products! February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing Battery The M12 Redlithium batteries are pretty amazing, and these 4.0Ah XC batteries seem to pack an extra punch in addition to their longer run time. They charge very quickly too. I had been using the standard 1.5Ah compact batteries with my M12 tool lineup, and finally got a hold of one of these 4.0Ah extra capacity batteries. The big boost in run time was the obvious bonus, but since I've heard that the XC batteries can supply certain Milwaukee tools with more power, I thought I'd run some experiments to verify the speculation. The idea makes sense in theory: more cells connected in parallel allow for more current to be discharged without the tool overheating as quickly. More current draw equals more power. The first test I ran was with my M12 5-3/8" circular saw. I took a sheet of 1/2" MDF, and purposefully wavered my cut line while I was ripping it. I stalled the tool while using the M12 compact battery, but only bogged it down while using the M12 extra capacity battery. Keep in mind that this was a very unscientific test, since I had no way of measuring the amount of torque I was applying to the handle in my attempts to get the blade to bind. The second test I ran was with my M12 1/4" FUEL impact driver. I drove a 1/4"x4" lag bolts into the end grain of a 2x4 and timed how long it took each run with the different batteries. I attempted to just let the weight of the tool drive the lag bolts, rather than pushing down on it, since I figured it would be more consistent. The XC batteries are around twice the weight of the CT ones, so that may have played into the driving speeds a minimal amount. I repeated the test four times for each battery type, and ended up with an average of 4.3 seconds for the XC battery, and 5.2 seconds for the CT battery. So both my "tests" came out in favor of the conclusion that the XC batteries supply a bit more power to the M12 tools (at least the FUEL versions). My experimental results are backed up by referencing maximum torque specifications listed on XC kits vs CT kits for the otherwise same product number tools. The extra capacity kits generally list 8-12% more torque than the compact ones. Examples include the M12 2403 drill/driver, and the M18 2604 impact hammer. Note that both of those are FUEL models, so that may play into which tools utilize the extra current output capacity. April 27, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I got a battery I charged it and it works, what else, oh yeah I hate, hate, hate, those plastic packages. January 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makes the M12 Even Better! I am extremely impressed with the Milwaukee M12 lineup, and I think that the battery holds a lot of weight to why. The battery life that the tools have is amazing, and the extended battery makes it that much better. The battery only takes a little bit longer to charge than the standard M12 battery, which takes 30 minutes. The extended battery does not take hours to charge. Batteries are expensive, but $80.00 for a single battery is a bit much. Look for multi-packs and promotional SKUs before resorting to this single battery SKU. It should be noted that the shape of the battery can ruin the ergonomics of some tools. The M12 tools are designed to make the battery look very sleek and almost built in to the tool, so the extended battery can look a little weird in some (palm nailer, jobsite radio). This is just cosmetics though, the longer battery life is worth it! August 11, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Milwaukee M12 EXTENDED Life Yes and yes... those are the answers to your 2 questions... Q1 Does this battery really provide the longer life it's rated to do? & Q2 Is this battery worth the cost? Yes and Yes... as for cost, if this was $150.00, it would be worth the investment! It Truly extends the use time , in my case by a factor if 5.2 times the original (small) battery. January 13, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good value This battery has twice the life as other battery powered tools that I own. December 15, 2014
