Self-Retracting Knife is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Has a design flax but... This type of knife is specifically designed to be used in factories where there must be a minimal chance of lacerations and other incident reports. From a design perspective, the thumb screw was a big mistake for Milwaukee; it will unscrew and fall apart in your pocket! However, you can fix this by wrapping the screw in plumber's thread tape. If this is still annoying, I'd recommend buying the self-retracting safety knife sold by Hyde or Stanley.

I normally give good reviews as most of the tools I've bought from HD have done their job well, but this stands out as the opposite. Firstly, the fact that you have to keep your thumb pushing the knife blade out for it to cut sounds like a good safety feature, but if you are cutting anything long, it gets tiring and you end up putting a lot of the force into simply keeping the blade extended. Sounds trivial but it's a pain. the worst thing is the large dial on the side which is a tool-less way to open up the case. What this means is that every few times you grab the knife, the dial works its way loose and the whole thing falls apart in your hands. I really wish I'd gone with a basic knife.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great idea with that little extra Milwaukee always seems to add This is really two tools in one - a razor knife, and, thanks to a little notch in the side, a box cutter. Amazing how such a little addition can make a big difference, I'm wondering why I've never seen this before. I don't know why, but for some reason that little box cutter notch is a lot easier to cut boxes with than just having the blade out. The self retracting is a great feature, especially if you have kids, but also for any adults like myself who can't seem to always retract a normal blade all the way and end up cutting things you didn't intend to.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Falls Apart The thumb screw on this knife must be constantly tightened. Failure to tighten the screw will result in the knife falling apart. I resolved the issue by making a polyethylene washer from a milk jug, to go under the screw head. Now the screw stays tight. Milwaukee, this is a simple fix that would cost less than a penny per knife.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from a safer utility knife This utility knife has a spring-loaded blade that snaps back when you release the thumb advance slider. That makes it safer - if it slips out of your hand it will retract pretty quick, and when not in use it's one less sharp thing laying around the work site. The thumb advance is large and easy to hold in place, so for most jobs this feature doesn't get in the way. However there are times when I wish the blade were fixed - for example when cutting a picture mat. The blade also has a rounded tip, which I think makes sense. It's less likely to snap off, and maybe you have less chance of cutting the contents of a package while opening it. The rounded tip is sharp and starts a cut as well as the usual pointed tip.. In other respects it's a really good utility knife, with a large comfortable handle having a grippy texture, an opening knob that doesn't need a coin or screwdriver, and a small notch that exposes a bit of blade for tasks like cutting cord. The only reason I'm giving 4 starts instead of 5 is that I wish it had a way to lock the blade in position to make some tasks easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great design and comfortable for use The knife is exactly what I was looking for and the price I paid is quite reasonable. The product is comfortable to use and works extremely well. The only drawback is that the safety blades with the rounded tip, which I prefer to use, are not available as an in-store product and must be bought online.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best product I've found for box cutting This knife is incredibly sturdy feeling. It oozes quality, and has quickly become my "go to" knife for most routine cutting. And for box cutting, it shines. The retraction is an important safety feature. Simply push the knife out, contact the box, and drag it down the line. The knife stays engaged until you finish the cut and automatically retracts. Awesome. And it works well for other routine uses, although you may have to hold the slide out to keep the knife engaged. Do keep in mind, however, that not every use type works with a retractable knife like this. One example is drywall cutting. There's a case you want a knife that won't retract. Don't get this kind of knife for that kind of use pattern. But most uses benefit from the retract spring. It is simply so much safer. Bonus feature. Can you see the little string cutting notch? Nice touch. You can keep the knife retracted while cutting string or other small cords. Finally, I find the blade change to be a breeze. It comes apart without a screwdriver, and I thought blade insertion was a breeze. Not sure why some people are having problems with that. It is very easy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Always comes apart Just like the title, this unit always falls apart. I have to keep on retightening the screw that holds this unit together even while cutting. When cutting the screw comes out enough to where the 2 pieces starts to come apart. Overall Milwaukee has other great knives. I just do not recommend this one.
