Can I just put this on the wires going into, say, a garbage disposal, and see if electricity is present?
Asked by: kman
yes, that's the beauty of it! always throw the breaker and the switch to off and test again before disconnecting any wiring.

i need to drill a hole in a wall, with the power to the house on, can i place this tool on the wall to determine if there is an electrical wire behind the wall?
Asked by: electricnoob
That would not be advised. Use this Milkaukee tool to assure power is off at all near-by receptacles, switches and lights. The, simply use a punch to create a hole.

how does it turn off and on?

How does this turn off and on? do you push down on the clip or is there another on/off?
Asked by: bleep2112
Just squeeze the pocket clip and the Milwaukee will beep if battery is good. Hold the clip closed to check wiring, release clip and tool is automatically in the off position. Do remove batteries for long term storage. If your Milwaukee will be used regularly, then use the pocket clip on a pouch of your electric bag to prevent accidental "on position" and a dead battery. Easy as Pie!

Want to make sure no power is at the plug

want to change out plugs .. how would i use this tool to make sure I have the power off to the plug ?
Asked by: dc
That's why I have trusted this Milwaukee tool with my LIFE for well over 16 years. Just stick the Milwaukee tool against each receptacle plug hole. The Milwaukee will sound off. Now, go cut off the breaker and test the receptacle again. When no "long beep" comes from this tool other than the initial "good battery/on" single beep, power is dead. Its nice to have a second person cutting breakers off and on, but I do it alone all the time.

I have wired homes, motels, gas companies, medical facilities and schools. I have dropped this tool from a ladder many a time. now, if you're seeking out a shorted wire, you will need to apply a process of illumination. If two or more insulated wires are leaning on one another, just go down the wire insulator about 6" away from the insulated contact and life is great. its not a flashlight so batteries last about a year. clip it on like a pen to prevent intermittent "ready" beep (battery test). light weight doesn't mean low quality. don't buy a name unless its proven. I lost mine this week and will buy another just like it. I trust my life to this Milwaukee tool. you bet!

This is what many contractors buy in bulk for their electricians, because they are cheap. They are poorly made, prone to malfunction and are unreliable. Save a life, buy a fluke.
