Answer:
This detects presence of AC voltage. If there is AC voltage, this detector will announce it. It will NOT pick up DC voltage.
There should not be voltage in a waterline. If there is, you have problems more serious than can be detected or solved with this tool.

Answer:
You can not just touch it to a switch plate but if you flip the switch to the on position you can touch the detector to the switch at the base. It is a better to remove the light switch plate and test in case there are any other wires in box that may be live that go to a receptacle, etc.

Very good when needed to locate an (electrical cable) or receptacle that doesn't have voltage running through it. Unfortunately it'll also indicate power "and beep" to any other cable that is within a foot of the one that you're tracing. My short was in the attic and most of the power conduits were running right next to each other so I couldn't use this detector, so what I decided to do was to turn off ALL the circuit breakers at the box except for the one that was going to the power outlet that wasn't working, then climbed back up-to the attic, then used the detector to trace the conduit that had power until I found the short, wasn't easy, believe me. I gave it a 4 star because of the unfortunate situation that I mentioned above, other than that it's an excellent tool to have. PS: Remember to take out the batteries when storing it so they'll not explore and render the detector useless. Best of luck to you, hope this review helps.

Since you always check a live line to see if the unit is working, it is neither reliable for the test or general use. Buy a better one.
