the stain and poly concept is fantastic but using this product is irritating. Like one reviewer has said, the wood you are staining must be properly prepped so if your staining something that has a lot of paint/stain on it, this will take a while. I had to sand our wood trim down to the raw wood and depending on your preference, since this is gloss it will show imperfections, it took me at least 3 hours to sand window trim for 5 windows. Having the right tools is a must!! You need a natural bristle brush to use this stain,I tried using a Purdy poly brush and it came out streaky, a foam brush was smoother but it barely got any of the stain on the wood. In between coats, you gotta use steel wool to remove any imperfections, sand paper is too abrasive. If you are willing to put the work in and if used right this product is great.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Andrea Do NOT buy this stuff
Taking this stuff back tomorrow. I didn't have a problem with the consistency like some people have commented, but it did absolutely nothing for refinishing my furniture. Not only that, but the color is way off. I tried it on a raw board to see the color and it was a dark cherry... no where near espresso. Does not at all work over poly like stated. Don't waste your money.

If you are planning on using this stain for a larger project (anything over 4 square feet) use something else. I have used minwax for a long time and have had no problems with any stain or clear coat but this stuff is awful. I built a desk for my son and used it to stain a butcher block style top. I thought it would be a good idea to use this product thinking it would cut my finishing time in half. I was wrong. It is impossible to get an even coat and when you overlap a section that was just done it will cause major color variances, even if that section is still wet. The process of applying the stain and not having to apply a poly saved time but I spent more time sanding and repairing then if I would have just used a regular stain and then applied a separate poly coat. Save yourself the trouble and time and buy something else.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Chuck I'd buy it again.
This product works well but is not for those who don't want to put in the work. You MUST properly sand your wood back down to the original grain and you have to spend the time with the finishing sanding (120-220 grit) once you've gotten the wood with the rougher stuff. Wood prep is key.
I recently refinished all my kitchen cabinets and they came out beautifully, but I did have to redo a couple of my first attempts because I didn't prep the wood well enough. Also, you probably don't want to try to hand brush this stuff. It's messy and difficult to spread evenly with a brush. I bought a $25 paint sprayer and borrowed a friend's air compressor. It went on very easily and smoothly and now it's like I have a brand new kitchen. Bottom line, invest the time to get your surfaces well sanded and procure the right tools to apply the Polyshades. You'll have good results without the hassle of having to go back and apply a polyurethane coat after you've gotten the desired stain color. Polyurethane is a hassle to work with. It's best to get it done in one step and this is the product for you to do it with.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by ELoVA Good for store brand
For a cheap off the shelf this is great. However, anyone attempting to brush this will find it difficult to work with; it is best to spray this or any other combination stain/finish. Also, this is the high gloss and may not be suitable for most furniture; I was doing a bar top which you want to be high gloss, you would not want this on an end table or chair unless you are into the Ikea look. For furniture it would be better to use a Satin (the gold can).

thought I could get my kitchen cabinets done in half the time with this product since it combines stain and top coat in one....WRONG!! This product is so difficult to work with....I've had do and redo the application over and over on just two cabinets and it still doesn't look right! Don't waste your money! I will be going back to the store to buy separate stain and top coat

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by PatM Works in limited circumstances
Works okay for certain projects but do some research first. This stuff is somewhat difficult to work with and only seems to work for specific circumstances. Apparently it's best to spray it.
Tried to stain/finish quarter round, after 5 coats the color is no darker. Brushing looks horrible.
