Customer Questions & Answers

Can I stain after applying Sanding Sealer? I'm trying to properly seal and stain a fresh piece of hickory.

Asked by: cprDIYer
Hello. The answer provided by one of our knowledgeable community members is partially correct. The Sanding Sealer will seal the wood, preventing stain from absorbing completely, as it is designed to do. However, our Polyshades Stain & Finish in one product can be applied over our Sanding Sealer. Regards, Customer Service

Is not as good as the classical lacquer-based sanding sealers, which for some reason none of the home centers carry now. Takes longer to dry and does not soak in as well nor does it produce a nice smooth finish. Also does not strengthen the wood fibers from what I can tell. Also doesn't seem to have the powder (talc, classically) that the traditional products used so it really doesn't fill and it barely seals. Not an environmental issue from what I can tell as it can be ordered at some stores (in quantity of four quarts, min!). I think the manufacturer just wants to sell this, or maybe the stores (all three majors around me) have just decided that they only want to sell this and, of course, since they never sell any of the classical product their computer doesn't order any.

The closet with it barely took any stain, even though we followed the directions of the sanding sealer and stain. We decided to do the project without it. At the end of the project - even though the closet with the sanding sealer was stained an extra time it was still way lighter (see pics comparing) Extra step and extra money.

I have been using this for years now. 1 coat, sand with 400 grit, 2nd coat, sand, Then 2 coats of finish. With this, I get a perfect, high end furniture finish every time! It is literally the easiest product to use. Water based, so easy clean up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cracked It cracked up over areas filled in with wood filler. I will now have to remove it and start from scratch. What a waste of time and money. The water based wood filler was dry (6 days) and it did not have any instruction advising not to use waterborne/water based products over it. The surface was clean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product that seals open wood grain nicely. I use this product whenever I'm not staining my projects. It does an excellent job of filling in open wood grain such as red oak. I apply two thick coats sprayed on and then sand in as little as 30 minutes later with 150 grain paper. This step saves me wet sanding later on and clean up is so easy it's a no brainer anytime I desire a natural finish. Works excellent in combination with minwax's polycoat water based varnishes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from uneven coating water based, does not coat uniformly, additional sanding does not remover the uneven pattern. The added pattern always there after multiple poly coating and sanding. my big mistake to used it before poly coating. can not be fixed unless use drum sander to remove a layer of wood.
