Customer Questions & Answers

Does this have a strong odor?

Asked by: Susie
Hello, Our Polycrylic Clear Finish is water-based, so it does not emit a strong odor. It is advisable though to properly ventilate any area that you are working in when applying of our products. Regards,Minwax Customer Support

Can you use this product over paint? thanks

Asked by: weldergurl
Yes. As an artist, i use Polycrylic to give a protective coat to my acrylic paintings. You can even add water-based paints to the Polycrylic for creating transparent color layers.

Customer Reviews

1 gal. Satin Polycrylic Protective Finish is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Water based means no nasty stain smell! I spray this with my LVLP automotive paint gun from Costco and it lays great, 3 coats of this makes a great finish. Brushes are unequal in volume and sponges are terrible. But the best part of this is that 2 hours after final spray coat, I can use the item and set it in my house without any nasty stain smell! So if u want to use oil based stain and don't want to aerate the stained item for days, spray this over it once and the smell is sealed 2 hours later!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value The people giving this product bad reviews probably didn't apply this product properly. I use this product extensively at my work to protect woodwork and painted woodwork. It holds up to the constant battering from the public, and cleans up easily. My only complaints is that it builds a little too much, I wish they had a "thinner" lower solids product for low-buildup finishes. And as another reviewer complained, it is glossier than one would expect. The satin is basically semi-gloss. Wish they had a flat. Would I use it for high-usage areas, no. But this is a GREAT product for picture frames, small furniture, add a clear coat over cabinets, etc. Wish they sold it in 5's!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great product easy to use, dries fast, durable, easy clean, doesn't change wood color. Satin has just the right amount of shine, between flat and semi gloss, not too shiney. A little pricey though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I cannot complain I needed a product with a satin finish that would dry very quickly. I chose Polycrylic after reading the label. I sanded my yellow pine as directed, and applied a coat to both sides, including the tongues and grooves. The next day I sanded the face side with 220 and applied a second, fast drying coat. I am thoroughly happy with the result. The planks will be the ceiling in my "shed" AKA piano room. I let them dry for another day and worked on the A/C system. I have 2 more planks coming for spares, but I am sure they will come out fine. They say a gallon covers 300 square feet. I got much better than that from the gallon I purchased. I have no problem with grain not showing, or it being too glossy. I think the product worked excellently for a brush on application.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from disappointing result I thought I'd try this water-based clear finish for an Ikea unfinished table. Eight (yes, 8!) coats later and the result is nowhere near what I'd get with an oil-based finish. And I followed instructions, sanded between coats...then I just gave up.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from dulls the look of the grain Good product if you must have something that dries fast with low odor. But, if you want to see the grain of the wood, it dulls it quite a lot...not nearly as good looking as poly or laquer, in satin or clear...or flat for that matter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scraches easy Does not protect. Used it on the inside window frame/ bench. Very dissapointed. It can be scrached with finger nail!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from satin is not satin For the fifth time, I bought a gallon of clear satin and ended up with a semi-gloss. Miniwax must frequently mislabel their product.
