Customer Questions & Answers

CAN YOU PUT WAX ON WIPE ON POLY??

Asked by: JON
You can, but you don't need to. I've used this for a few years and never wax it on the furniture I make. Just wipe it with a clean rag and it will still look great.

Does this product smell like oil-based stains do?

Does this product smell like oil-based stains do?
Asked by: Nik
Hello, Like our other oil-based products, there will be an odor associated with our Wipe-On Polyurethane. However, this is a thinner viscosity and should have a lesser odor. Proper ventilation in the area will help to alleviate the odor. Regards, Minwax Customer Service

Can this be used on top of Danish oil for an increase in durability?

Asked by: Ayriad
Hello. You would need to test for conmmpatibility, but we don't foresee any issues there. Make sure the Danish Oil is fully cured and lightly scuff the surface for adhesion of our product. Regards, Minwax Customer Service

can this be used in 40° weather (in unheated/uninsulated garage)? if yes what would be expected dry times for each coat?

Asked by: Chris
Hello, Chris. You may experience a hazy/cloudy appearance that will clear up with warmer temperatures. 40 degree temperature will also extend the drying/cure times. Drying conditions are based on 77 degrees (or 25 degrees C) and relative humidity of 50%. Regards, Minwax Product Support

1 pt. Wipe-On Poly Clear Satin is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Product I love this product! My dad suggested it. No chance of brush marks and goes on evenly. Leaves a satin finish. I'm in the process of doing multiple doors in my house. This has made things run smoothly and quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent poly product I consider this to be an excellent product. For new work, I rate it highly for ease of application and finished appearance, especially its excellent self-leveling properties. I typically apply two, occasionally three coats and strongly recommended (per instructions) light sanding between coats. I use a Norton 220 "foam" sanding block following by a tack cloth wipe over. Referring to another review, I have used it on hardwoods (walnut, oak, mahogany, birch) with no clouding issues. For refinishing stair railings, built-on cabinets, etc. I use a single coat after appropriate surface prep. For refinishing stair balusters, this product is unbeatable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I use on all types of wood. I have had success in using Wipe-On Poly on every wood project and love this so much I have switched to the Wipe-On Poly exclusively. I've applied both with a brush and a lint-free cloth. I never had a clouding or brush marks with this product. I've included a photo of a Intarsia of a Chihuahua with the following types of natural wood: Poplar, Ash, Walnut, Red Oak, Maple attached to stained Baltic Birch with a stained Pine frame. I used a brush to apply and followed the instructions using a 220 sandpaper before the final coat. I have also added one photo of the Marine Plaque that I use Wipe-On Poly. MinWax's Wipe-On Poly Shows the natural Beauty of all my wood projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice look For my project I was building a sliding barn door with a weathered look. I wanted the protection of a poly, but did not want to add too much sheen. This goes on thin and even and did not give the fake plastic look you get with a standard brush on poly. It goes on like a rub on oil finish, and you don't get the bubbles of poly either.
