Customer Questions & Answers

What type of cloth should be used? I tried cheesecloth and that left lint all over the piece.

What type of cloth should be used? I tried cheesecloth and that left lint all over the piece.
Asked by: Mike
Use soft cotton material that you shake well and remove any loose threads or debris. As you use the product, keep your cloth in a sealed, clean, glass jar to use for all subsequent coats. Your cloth should never be laid on or touch anything other than your latex glove, the inside of your sealed "keeping jar", or your project. If it ever does, discard. I typically thin the product about 15% and do at least 5 coats. Dries fast. I sand starting after the second coat with 600 grit wrapped around a foam block or sponge, with VERY light pressure. I've been refinishing for over 30 years, and guarantee that following this procedure will give beautiful success.

Asked by: Nik
No it doesn't. I really don't recall much of a smell to it and I did five doors.

Can this be used on top of Danish oil for an increase in durability?

Asked by: Ayriad
Minwax says they won't necessarily guarantee good results going over someone else's product with out testing first (like you're gonna risk a job by just trying something), but this will work great: over your cured Danish oil, use 2 coats of Watco Wipe On Poly and then put the Minwax over that. The Minwax product dries much faster, is easier to work with, will leave no wipe marks if you're careful, and is just plain better than the Watco product. Always lightly thin any wipe-on poly product. Years of refinishing experience.

At a room temp. of 70 degrees.. About how llong before you can apply the next coat of finish?

Asked by: jimsawdust
It's not just the temp, it's the humidity. Here in my near-Vegas shop, I thin the product lightly, and it's dry to the touch in about 90 minutes. I typically wait 3 hours, lightly sand with 600 grit, and recoat about 5-6 times for a spectacular hard finish.

I greatly prefer this over brush on poly. And forget about using rattle cans of spray, this gives a more reliable finish, no runs, drips or errors! It dries quickly to a hard finish. Odor is very low for such a product, I used it in my den in the winter and nobody in the family complained. I used it to refinish my vintage 1983 Peavey T-15 guitar and the results are fabulous! Rock on!

Great Great way to put on Poly, after several cans and projects here is my 2 cents. i used to put it on liberally and struggle with finishing it. it still looked nice but i found if go moderately or lightly to apply, and sand the first coat very very lightly with 220 sandpaper and i also like scotchguard. Then follow with light light second coat and buff the next day by hand or with my automotive buffer and it is incredible an almost like glass finish.,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent poly product I consider this to be an excellent product. For new work, I rate it highly for ease of application and finished appearance, especially its excellent self-leveling properties. I typically apply two, occasionally three coats and strongly recommended (per instructions) light sanding between coats. I use a Norton 220 "foam" sanding block following by a tack cloth wipe over. Referring to another review, I have used it on hardwoods (walnut, oak, mahogany, birch) with no clouding issues. For refinishing stair railings, built-on cabinets, etc. I use a single coat after appropriate surface prep. For refinishing stair balusters, this product is unbeatable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I use on all types of wood. I have had success in using Wipe-On Poly on every wood project and love this so much I have switched to the Wipe-On Poly exclusively. I've applied both with a brush and a lint-free cloth. I never had a clouding or brush marks with this product. I've included a photo of a Intarsia of a Chihuahua with the following types of natural wood: Poplar, Ash, Walnut, Red Oak, Maple attached to stained Baltic Birch with a stained Pine frame. I used a brush to apply and followed the instructions using a 220 sandpaper before the final coat. I have also added one photo of the Marine Plaque that I use Wipe-On Poly. MinWax's Wipe-On Poly Shows the natural Beauty of all my wood projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Product I love this product! My dad suggested it. No chance of brush marks and goes on evenly. Leaves a satin finish. I'm in the process of doing multiple doors in my house. This has made things run smoothly and quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice look For my project I was building a sliding barn door with a weathered look. I wanted the protection of a poly, but did not want to add too much sheen. This goes on thin and even and did not give the fake plastic look you get with a standard brush on poly. It goes on like a rub on oil finish, and you don't get the bubbles of poly either.
