Hi 1PYT,
Pressed wood makes a very poor planter and this product will not protect it over the long term.

Rated 2.9 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Stay away from it - use an oil-based instead This is one of the most temperamental finishes I've used. Poor results and I ruined a table top finish. I must be at blame also, but the instructions are very limited. Had to sand everything again. Don't be fooled by the "water based". It's very difficult to apply, sets in seconds so you don't have any control with overlapping. Difficult to attain good results, and probably needs some tricks for its application. Too late for me to learn them. I applied it over BEHR Premium Plus interior paint. Maybe a conflict between the two? Practice a lot with it or you'll have regrets. March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great look Gloss Look Been using Minwax for years. Easy to apply with brush. Dries really quick. There were complaints about foaming up, make sure you don't shake the can. Stir it with a paint stick, shaking it will make it foam up and bubbles. Make sure you wait between coats or you will get white streak in your coating. Let it dry at least two hours then sand with a very fine sandpaper 220 grit to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Wipe down after sanding to get all the dust off. Three coats is recommended. Final coat wait 3+ hours before handling it and 24 hours before normal use. January 4, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good for smaller projects, not so much for larger ones I bought this stuff to coat a little box I made out of ebonized red oak and maple, since it was just about all I could come up with that wouldn't alter the color of the wood. It does cause slight darkening like practically any finish, but since it's water based it won't amber. Works perfect in that regard, kept the deep blue / purple hue of the ebonized oak from going nearly black like it would have with a polyurethane, and kept the maple looking fresh. The instructions say to put on in at least 3 thin coats. The problem I found for the next project I used it on is that it sets up so quickly that you're guaranteed to get brush strokes unless you really glob it on in thick coats. Also, you can't tip off the coat to get rid of any bubbles that form for that same reason. A propane torch can help get rid of some of the air bubbles. Don't worry if it goes on a bit milky, that will go away as it sets up. For my smaller project it was fairly easy to get an even, thick coat to get that glass-like finish. But for something bigger (in my case a 11"x2' side table top), there's just no way to get it completely even, UNLESS you do two thick coats, ignoring the recommendation that the manufacturer gives of 3. You lose some of the gloss since the pores of the wood can still absorb some of that second coat but at least it looks even and not like a hack job. Epoxy resin is probably the only way to go for getting a super high gloss finish on a larger surface. May 25, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Awful - clue words "ultra fast" Dried too fast for use on large area. Streaked and foamed like crazy. Used purdy brush, then tried foam brush. Had to put on thick and dry brush but still couldn't get perfect finish. Ruined my project! December 1, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't dry clear - I HATE MINWAX!!! I am so sick of Minwax products ruining my projects, but they are all the stores seem to carry. I bought this stuff expecting a clear gloss finish, followed all the instructions perfectly, but it dried with milky white streaks ruining my table. I should know better by now,I don't think I have ever been fully happy with a Minwax product, the stains are never represented accurately for color. And beware of the PolyShades product! That will ruin your surface too, streaky and gloppy. July 1, 2012
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Only use this product if you want a high gloss finish. I used this product to give a table top a protective finish. It works well, but the finish was too high gloss for me. I switched to a satin finish, which I prefer. November 19, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Used this many times I am a licensed contractor. I've used this product many times with no problems. I have also used the water based polyurethane. I've used many Minwax stains too, and I've always been happy with the results. December 18, 2012
