Customer Questions & Answers

Can you use this over paint

Asked by: Sandy
Hello, Actually, you can apply our Gel Stain over paint. Our stain is topical, so it can be applied over other coatings. You will need to make sure the paint is fully cured (not just dry to the touch) and in sound condition-nothing peeling. If the paint has any sheen to it or is really smooth, scuff it well and make sure the paint is clean. Always test fr compatibility. Regards, Minwax Customer Service

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to work with Good results I used this stain for several projects. All of them were with wood. I saw some bad reviews about using gel stain with steel or fiberglass doors and I can't comment on that since I used it to stain wood. I refinished a children's bedroom set that was purchased on craigslist. Since the stain is a gel, it was easy to apply with a rag. It went on pretty evenly and it was quick. I was happy with the results. I decided to use the same stain (a new can) a few months later to refinish a dining room table with 4 leaves. It had some chips and a spot where some chemical had removed the finish. I used wood putty for the chips and sanded it down. Applying the gel stain again was quick and easy. It went on evenly with a rag. I was very happy with this product and used it on 4 pieces of furniture.
