I was skeptical about using a stain & poly in one product. I usually use Rustoleum stain and a separate polyurethane but apparently the stain is backordered everywhere. I was hoping to finish my project over the weekend and streamlining the finishing steps was appealing. My son picked the color (the piece is toy storage for his room made of pine). I used a natural bristle brush and found the wider brush worked better and using long smooth strokes is ideal for this application. I was working in my garage on a 70 degree day and this stuff dries really quickly, so beware and make sure you keep moving to avoid it looking blotchy. My first coat looked a little rough, but the next day I wiped the piece down with 0000 Steel Wool and gave it another coat and the finish is beautiful. I can see myself purchasing this again for future projects.

Dried in 4 hours, applied 3 coats got a beautiful color, no terrible odors either. My husband and I are impressed.

EASY TO APPLY. VERY DURABLE SURFACE. PERFECT MAHOGANY COLOR. I WAS TRAINED IN DOING 17TH CENTURY FURNITURE, I FOUND I COULD USE THIS PRODUCT AND ACHIEVE THE RESULT WITH A LOT LESS WORK - I CALL IT THE CHEATER'S STAIN.

If you have the time or care a lot about your project, I would not recommend this product. Unlike traditional stain, you can not wipe on more or less to change the color. This means if you do not like the first coat, you are more or less stuck with that color, where a regular stain is much more forgiving. Also you you miss a spot, It can be noticeable to a keen eye after a few coats.
Now where this product excels is its ease of use and speed. It saves you the stain step and makes it staining and poly quick and easy. Just a few coats and you are good to go. For a basic project this is great, but for more professional work, I would use regular poly and stain.

If you are thinking of using it, DON'T!
Dries up fast..wasted $50 worth of brushes and 12 hours of prep-work and rework without luck...stripped it all off finally. Will never use the Minwax Polyshade again. The two step staining is the way to go.
By the way, Minwax didn't help much.

This works beautifully! You really need to do two coats, but as long as you follow the instructions on the can (like using a natural brush) the finish comes out wonderfully.
