This worked great! I just wiped it on with an old T-shirt, let it dry, and then applied Cherry stain. No blotches at all! My staircase is gorgeous! If I ever have to stain interior wood, I'll be sure to use this again.

Let dry totally before finish coats! Instructions say to apply finish coats withing two hours, but I found letting conditioner dry thoroughly produces far less streaky results.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by DaninKaty Really bring out the wood grain
I have been using this product for the last three years on all my wood projects. I like the way it brings the wood grain out in the projects. It helps make the stain look uniform. Brings up some of the wood fibers so you can sand them off and get a better smoother finish. Sometimes I just put a finish on top of this because the wood pops after using it. Its fast drying so 1 hour later I can sand if needed and then start staining or applying the finish coat. Nice product and will continue to use it on all my wood projects.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Doresoom Beautiful Results for Pine
I use this whenever I use pine for cheap woodworking projects. It gives a nice, even finish with no streaks or blotches, as long as you've prepared the wood correctly. (No cross sanding, finished with 220 grit, and make sure stain application is brushed on with the grain.) If you've ever tried staining pine without it, you'll know what a difference it makes!
No reason to buy the larger can unless you've got a huge project - they're priced the same per ounce. I had a quart for two years in my garage, and it went bad before I had used more than half of it.

I bought a pine sideboard cabinet and did some homework on how best to stain it. I'm glad I did because using this product saved me from making a disaster of it. The wood was very dry and even with a liberal amount of conditioner applied, it soaked it up quickly. I only needed one coat of stain to achieve the right color I was looking for, and it came out nice and even. There's no way I would have gotten these results without using this product, especially on pine.

I used this on Oak and it made a large difference. I needed to stain some stairs a dark mocha color. I performed a few tests, when I didn't use this the wood was more red than a dark brown. When I used the pre stain the wood came out almost exactly like the can picture, a nice dark brown. Just followed the directions, let it sit for 15 minutes, wiped off any extra and followed with the stain. Highly recommended if you need a dark rich color.

I have Drexel dresser that I stripped to the bare wood. And use this on a pecan and walnut finish and it did a excellent job of providing even coverage for staining. It even helped a dark ring blend better that I anticipated. A must if you are redoing furniture.

If you are really into your wood work, you will not be sorry you used the prestain. Like others have said (especially on softer woods). It will add a lil bit of a rich color to light color wood even though it is not a stain, but when used with light colored wood & light colored stain it adds a richness to the final finish & looks amazing. The main pourpose of this product is to open the pores of the wood to let the stain absorb better & evenly. It does make a huge difference if you really appreciate the apperiance of the grains/knots of wood products. Simple to apply, brush or cloth & within a few minutes you can apply the stain of your choice. Its like making a blurry picture clear
