Answer:
Can't give you an exact answer since the type of wood will absorb more or less than other types. Soft woods will soak up more of this than a hard wood will. On the Home Depot web site for this product they have a picture of the back label and at the bottom left it states a gallon will cover 500 sq. ft., but it doesn't state for what type of wood that they got this info from.

Answer:
The downloadable specs say 125 sq. ft per quart. But I think it will vary depending on the type of wood you're using and how much product you end up applying.

Any suggestions on how to get this to work well for the cut ends of the wood so the stain doesn't soak in too much? I played around with samples and it seems like you need to apply a lot and then with in a few mins put the stain on and quickly wipe off. Any thoughts on this?

I didn't feel that the end cuts came out as well as the rest of it did... I am going to have to think up another treatment for the edges so that they look more even and similar in color.

It is always a good practice to read about the product either online or while in the store before purchasing. 1 qt. Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for staining My wife and I had a project which required staining 55 boards of knotty pine. I was wondering if it was really necessary to prime to wood with wood conditioner so we decided to buy a pint and try it on a piece of knotty pine. We couldn't believe the difference between the section that did not have the wood conditioner and the section that had it.. On the section with the wood conditioner, the color was more robust and consistent. Be sure to make sure that the wood conditioner is soaked in or wiped off before applying the stain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A pleasant surprise, not hard to do at all! I had this large sheet of unfinished plywood, and I wanted to make a table top with it. I sanded it well, vacuumed it and wiped it down, and then used this Minwax conditioner to treat prior to staining. It looked so good that I considered using a light stain instead of a darker one I'd made up my mind about earlier! The color came out very nice! It looks more like a stain than a treatment! But it was so easy to use, I'd buy it again for another project! I took some photos, too...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really bring out the wood grain I have been using this product for the last three years on all my wood projects. I like the way it brings the wood grain out in the projects. It helps make the stain look uniform. Brings up some of the wood fibers so you can sand them off and get a better smoother finish. Sometimes I just put a finish on top of this because the wood pops after using it. Its fast drying so 1 hour later I can sand if needed and then start staining or applying the finish coat. Nice product and will continue to use it on all my wood projects.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well if you modify directions on can Let dry totally before finish coats! Instructions say to apply finish coats withing two hours, but I found letting conditioner dry thoroughly produces far less streaky results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No blotches! This worked great! I just wiped it on with an old T-shirt, let it dry, and then applied Cherry stain. No blotches at all! My staircase is gorgeous! If I ever have to stain interior wood, I'll be sure to use this again.
