Is it possible to apply this with a cloth?
Asked by: BF
Hello. Applying our brush-on products with a cloth will smear the finish and provide an uneven sheen. We do not recommend to do this. Regards, Minwax Customer Support

Can this be used on metal surfaces? I have a table I would like to use outdoors and it has metal legs that may rust if not protected.
Asked by: Pam13
I can tell you my experience. I used this product in the spray form to apply a protective finish on an exterior metal door, which had been primed with an oil based primer and then painted with an oil based white gloss enamel. The door is exposed to direct sunlight for 6 to 8 hours per day. After one season, the topcoat turned yellow. I have to sand the door down, reprime, repaint and hope for the best. Perhaps a darker colored door would not have yielded such a drastic change in color.

I put it on my newly stained door why did it turn my door orange

Will this make a solid unfinished pine door look good without staining it? Most of my doors have an orange tint (built in 1957) Thanks

is this a water base item, suitable for outdoor use?

Asked by: 007
No it is oil-based. It also has limited UV resistance. http://www.askhlm.com/Articles/ArticleViewPage/tabid/75/ArticleId/26/Paint-On-A-Clear-Finish.aspx

If you actually read the back label on the can it states very clearly that it will have an amber/yellow hue when it dries and to not use it on any light colored woods. I guess people who complain about it yellowing their project should of read the entire label. I add 5-10% paint thinner to help with leveling and to slow down dry times just a little bit and this stuff works beautifully. Will absolutely buy again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic product to apply, levels nicely, good open time I'll never use another urethane product, spar or poly, after applying this. This goes on very well, doesn't run and levels nicely leaving no noticeable brush Mark's that I can see. It was easy to go back and brush out the product 1-2 minutes after applying since open time is more than adequate. Product dries to touch in just an hour or so but gave it about a day between coats. Two coats probably would have been plenty, but I easily got three coats on a wooden Adirondack rocker using thin coats of the product and sanding with 220 grit between each coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Staind Front Door This stuff is great, follow the instructions and you will be impressed. I used their stain and you need the new pre-stain they sell. Makes it go on so much smoother and no "blotching" issues. It is worth the money. I refinished a 18 year old wood exterior door. Sand it well and all will be OK.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spar Urethane I checked for a topcoat that would help protect a oak table I was redoing plus endure the abuse it would need too handle, so this product met what I needed. I read online and on the label that the product would yellow light colored stains/wood. This project I did was a dark color so the yellowing was not noticeable. The urethane spread rather easily with a natural bristle brush, much better than a synthetic bristle brush which was more difficult to spread with less coverage. Natural bristle brush had a much better coverage and cleaned up better also. Put 2 coats on and used a 220 grit sandpaper to prepare the surface for another coat and it was great for the end result. The table looks brand new and the topcoat is noticeable and helps it "pop".

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Will not cover anywhere near 125sf This product claims to cover up to 125 square feet per quart but I used 3/4 of a can just on one side of a 32 square foot sheet of plywood with just one coat. I am using this product to hopefully waterproof boat decking so I will write another review on how it holds up at another time.

Resulted in a beautiful, hard, honey gold finish on beadboard. Used 3 coats with sanding. Purchased 4x8 sheets of pine faced bead board at Home Depot for use in a porch ceiling. Preferred a natural wood finish. First primed back of the boards with Zinsser Bullseye interior/exterior. This will help block any moisture or staining from above the ceiling and help manage board expansion from changing humidity. Even without leaks dirt and discoloration (accumulated dirt, bug droppings, etc.) can migrate through an unprimed board over time. For front side I initially did light, easy, all-over sanding of the boards with a 120 grit sanding sponge to remove obvious mill fuzz that is all over the surface. Used a 5" brush to coat entire board, waited 24 hours, did light sanding with 220 grit to remove the stipples and remove gloss. Second coat, wait 24 hours, 220 sanding. Then applied final coat. Waited full 24 hours before handling. I was really pleased with the results and I'm sure the boards will look great on the porch ceiling. Finishing the boards before installing on a ceiling makes the job way easier. Any nicks or scratches from installation can easily be touched up with a little brush. WARNING: Wear splinter resistant gloves when handling the boards! The lap edges have many and sometimes long splinters that will get you. I didn't wear gloves and while sanding managed to run a big long splinter through a finger. I almost aways wear gloves but got careless. Wear the right protection and paint in well ventilated area to avoid the fumes. Take your time with the job and the results will be good.
