Can I use it on painted (not stained) wood?

Can I use it on painted (not stained) wood?
Asked by: Abe
Hello. Yes, we agree. Polycrylic can be used over paint. However, latex paint needs to be cured for 30m days, oil-based paint, 7 days. If the paint has any sheen or is chalking, it will need to be dull (220 is an ideal grit), make sure the paint is dry and is clean, and is not flaking or peeling. Regards, Minwax Customer Service

Can I use this over oil base stain on my dining table top?

Asked by: AGA
I just used MINWAX brand STAIN on my kitchen island top, an oil based stain. It says on the can that MINWAX product Polycrilic can be applied over it. so YES for sure if you use Minwax oil based stain. I would wait 24 hours to allow stain to dry before using the Polycrylic.

That two hour recoat time is very appealing, but it comes at a price. There is no leveling...NONE...with this product. They mean it when they say dry to touch in half hour. I did a counter and it was settling as fast as I was putting it on. Any and all brush strokes were captured no matter the stroke- thick, thin, foam or synthetic. I tested it.. It was perfect weather conditIons and I followed the instructions. I have used poly many times over my life with fantastic results. This was not one of them. Do not attempt big areas with this product. They final result is worth far more than any quick dry time.

I purchased this product for a DIY outdoor pallet bar table we made recently. I read the instructions for use and followed them exactly to make sure I didn't overdo it. The first coat dried exactly in the time frame noted on the label and second coat finished up the look. Our table worked out great and I thought the product was easy to use.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Issues with the first coat this was my first time staining and finishing something so I'm sure this review could be chalked up to my inexperience with stains and finishes. I recently built a wine rack for someone and had no problems with the staining process so I got a nice brush followed all the dierections and laid my first coat of polycrylic down. I had a really hard time seeing where i was spreading the stuff, it was difficult to to get even coverage, it had a sort of tacky consistency and so it left all kinds of brush strokes after it dried. As far as the color goes it didn't seem to alter or leave any kind of coloring other than brush strokes. I used some fine grit sanding paper and lightly sanded by hand after it dried but that left all kinds of scuffy kind of marks even after I wiped it down. I just gave it a second coat so I'm hoping I can get it right, the first coat has me a little worried. If youve never used this before I would recommend maybe practicing on a scrap piece of wood before attempting it on a finished product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this stuff Ive been using this stuff instead of regular old poly and so far its great. Ive used it on several wood projects including a coffee table and clock with various types of stains and no yellowing. Ive put it over white trim paint with no discoloration. Note to user: this stuff works great in a compressed air HVLP spray gun. Coats even and clear, sand with 300 or higher grit paper with very light pressure, comes out smooth as glass. Unfortunately, Ive just started using this stuff so I cant speak to its durability over time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Poly acrylic A great finish for projects that will not be subject to heavy use. Dries very fast, flashes very, very fast in warm temp and low humidity. For first coat it would be beneficial to lightly prewet the wood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I used it on a dresser that I painted white and it performed beautifully. A year later it is still as clear as the day I applied it and has been very durable. It was a breeze to apply - I actually used a sprayer to apply it - and it dried in a snap. It dried much quicker that polyurethane and has never yellowed one bit like poly will. And since it's water-based it doesn't have the strong odor and fumes like all of the other clear coats have, and it cleans up with soap and water. I don't know what the other reviewers who reported to have problems did wrong, but if you just follow the instructions you will not be disappointed. It's actually pretty idiot-proof, which makes it a great clear coat for almost anyone to work with.
