Customer Reviews

1 qt. Semi-Gloss Polycrylic Protective Finish is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful finish! I can't understand how this could get a negative review, the finish was gorgeous and using the right brush and technique the application is effortless. As with any top coat, air bubbles can be a problem, but by letting it set for a bit and going back over the bubble, it flattens right out. No brush strokes, and clean up was easy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great look and finish for surfaces that won't get a lot of wear I bought this to finish the inside surfaces of a kitchen's-worth of cabinets. It's very easy to work with and goes on nice and smooth - no annoying bubbles which I tended to get with the oil based finish. After 3 coats I had a nice smooth and shiny surface. My only complaint/observation is that now the cabinets have been in use a couple of years the ones that take a lot of use (where we put mugs and plates in and out every day) the poly has worn away and will need to be reapplied. I think for these heavy traffic surfaces I will use something more hard wearing. So, good for decorative use but not for heavy traffic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Quality, Effective, Easy to Use, COATS EVENLY!! Just want to point out, first of all, that this product would have had 5 stars, except for the first reviewer who for some reason had problems with this coating evenly!! All I can say is that it must have been a dud, or perhaps he was doing something wrong like applying it over a finish that wasn't yet dried? Who knows! On to my review: I am a very amateur DIYer who has found this product highly recommended across many blogs primarily for the purpose of sealing / finishing painted furniture or other painted projects like cabinets doors etc. I have used it several times, and I love it! You just follow the instructions on the back, which means allowing some number of hours in between coats for the coat you've just applied to dry. Then you can proceed with applying subsequent coats. I usually do 2-3 coats for a piece of furniture, in order to offer maximum protection for the underlying paint against regular wear and tear. I am about to paint all the doors in my home, and I plan to use this over those as well. One of the awesome things about Polycrylic which many bloggers and online forum contributors have noted is that UNLIKE POLYURETHANE, it does NOT yellow over time. While this attribute of polyurethane may be no problem for darker stained or painted woods / surfaces, if you are painting anything white or light grey / some other light color, you will probably be disappointed if your beautiful project begins to take on a yellowish cast over time! Thus, this is really the best product to use as a finishing / sealing agent for light colored projects that you want to be waterproof / resistant and protected but which you want to retain their natural color! Five stars because it's amazing, Average value because it is almost $18 / quart...which is RIDICULOUS to someone like me who is looking to save money. But as there is nothing that can beat this product, I will continue to shell out the money and hope Minwax will make prices more reasonable or a competitor product will enter the market and drive down the price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from ok for a minwax finish this is about the only finish by minwax i will even consider using, i never brush it on i use a spray gun, i have had pretty decent results with this just make sure you run it through a coarse and fine strainer because it can be bumpy when it dries if you dont strain it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product I ran out of some Deft waterborne finish and purchased the Minwax Polycrylic from Home Depot. The product was easy to apply, there were some small air bubbles when first applied, but they later disappeared. Product produced a smooth, hard, clear finish when dry. My only minor frustration was that the finish was VERY glossy, not semi-gloss as expected. LOVED THE WATER CLEAN-UP.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Minwax product I've ever used I'll be honest, I have never posted a negative review of a product, and always am skeptical of the most negative reviews. That being said, this is the worst minwax product I have ever used. I have faithfully used minwax oil-based product for over a decade and have had nothing but good experiences. This product, however, is nothing short of horrible. I consider myself a relatively experienced woodworker, but nothing I did resulted in a good finish. They all had brush marks or air bubbles. I tried thinning it, using a good quality bristle brush, using a foam brush, and a combination of those things. Nothing resulted in a good finish. I was really hopeful this would be a good product and have easier clean up, but I was sadly disappointed.
