Customer Questions & Answers

Does this stain require a top coat? Planning to use on kitchen cabinets. Specifically what top coat if needed and is the topcoat brushed on?

Is there a darker grey than this one that does not have blue tones?
Asked by: Aprilsmom
Hello. Yes, our Wood Finish Stain is meant to be topcoated, for protection. Our Fast Drying Polyurethane is a durable choice, but it will amber or yellow. Our Polycrylic Finish is durable as well, but will not yellow. 2-3 coats are recommended. If you're looking for a wipe-on option, go with our Wipe-On Polyurethane. However, it is not qquite as durable as our brush-on products Regards, Minwax Customer Service

Customer Reviews

1 qt. Wood Finish Classic Gray Oil-Based Interior Stain is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Color! Purchased this stain by Minwax after reading reviews for Valspar's gray stain. Everyone was saying Valspar stain looked blue. I have a unfinished farm table I wanted stained gray for my patio. This Classic Gray is not blue! It is a true medium gray. It is darker than the sample in store or photo on front of can. I also bought some Ebony stain thinking I would have to darken the gray, but not necessary. It dries a dark, weathered, true gray color. If you are wanting to mimic weathered wood, this is the one to get. It dried fairly quickly even though it was a humid day when applied. Highly recommend this stain.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but inconsistent I like the color but it is really a tad inconsistent. Despite stirring before starting, I found a huge glob of pigment in the bottom of the can after 10mins. In some spots the color is dark gray. In other spots it's more "weathered oak." I used tung oil to finish and that evened everything out, but added more brown then I would like.
