Customer Questions & Answers

Is it necessary to put top coat on the floor after applying Chestnut Oil-Based Interior Stain?

Asked by: Malou
It depends on how long you want the finish to last ...and how much traffic the floor receives. Heavy traffic? Long-term results? Then it is best to apply a (polyurethane) good finish coat. I have used this stain on furniture and simply waxed the finished product ...and have been happy with the results. I have also used tongue oil over this stain with excellent results. But on my floors, I used a good quality polyurethane for long lasting results.

Have used this brand and color stain to finish chests, table, doors, baseboards, floors ...in both pine and oak wood. I use cloth (no brush) to apply and wipe away excess. This approach gives me more control over the amount of stain on the wood surface. I allow the stain to remain on longer (before wiping off excess) if I want a darker color. I usually apply two coats to assure a good, even look and seal. ...BUT I have also applied a single coat without wiping the excess to achieve even darker color/saturation. Every experiment with application and removal of the stain has left me very, very happy! LOVE the color and results. For example using red oak: I have achieved two pleasing and complimenting doing the following: Two coats (wiping between coats) on doors, door frames, and baseboards produced a reddish/chestnut color leaning on the darker side of a chestnut (from a tree). Applying one coat with a very 'light' wipe (on the flooring) produced a reddish color with a 'flatter/matte" look ...and leaning more toward a walnut shade. The bottom line: if you like the chestnut color you will love the results from this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slightly darker than I expected I used this product on a 30 year old mailbox post to refresh it's look. The wood was all dried out and grayish. It soaked up quickly and dried quickly as well. It looks great. It is a little darker than I expected but that could be the grayish tint of the 30 year old wood causing that. Overall very happy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good looking stain on red oak floor First ever oak wood floor redo and this stain is a beauty. Not too dark. Not red or orange. Dark enough to hide persistent stains in the wood. Adds a nice warmth to the room. Even though it is small. Will be finishing with semi gloss. Note - make sure to stir the can before use. There was a lot of solids at the bottom of the can.
