How to SPRAY polyurethane raw tree bark on shelf

This question is from 11.5 oz. Satin Fast-Drying Polyurethane Aerosol Spray

I have attached raw birch bark to the ends of a shelf. I did it myself as the market for such a shelf is way out of my pocketbook range!
I have two questions of the use of SPRAY polyurethane:

can I use the spray polyurethane to keep the bark in place for years to come?

I have also stenciled the shelf (which came painted white) and would like to preserve the stencil - can I spray poly on it? OR will it yellow??
Thanks

I don't polyurethane is what you are looking for, you would most likely want an epoxy of sorts. CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by It's Ok So I bought this because I wanted to quickly, and easily apply this to the bedside tables I was making. Overall, it was easy to apply and dried relatively quickly, but several months later I noticed problems. Primarily, I noticed that the white paint beneath this coating is now discoloring and giving off a yellowish hue. Not the look I was going to for and now I need to refinish them! I'd also note that you will probably need to buy more of this product than you think. It runs out very quickly. I'd recommend just using the stuff that comes in the can and apply it with a brush. I guess this product should be saved for stuff with more intricate details. I've included multiple photos with various lighting and flash to try and show you what I'm talking about. April 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This stuff is wonderful I use this product to refinish table tops, sometimes I need to do spot treatments and this comes in very handy. I apply it and give it about 30 minutes to dry then re-apply a coat as needed. February 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Cover and Dries OK, but leaves an "Orangepeel" finish i rarely write reviews, but, the performance of this product was so terrible I had to. I have been refinishing firearms for 20 years and I have never seen a product lay down with such a terrible appearance. No amount of proper cleaning, sanding and preparation would correct for the finish this garbage lays down. Go get a can or Krylon or ANY other product. January 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by terrible product Boy, am I mad! After using Defthane's similar product, I bought 12 cans of Minwax because i needed a lot of it to finish some custom window casings. Minwax product dried with a whit wax-like texture that rubs off with your fingers.... now I have to strip these casings and start again. HOURS of work! January 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not a good product I followed the directions on the label. The product left hazy streaks on the table. I put several coats and lightly sanded in between to try and remove the streaks. Didn't work... July 13, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Does not dry as fast as can based brush-on. I may have a bad lot of this product, but I used it for refinishing a chair and it left the surface tacky for 36 hours and would scratch easily with a fingernail. It went on beautifully and has a much better finish appearance, but there must be something about how thin the spray viscosity is that makes it take 3 to 4 times as long to dry as the can. I have to wait and see if it ever hardens. Before you second guess me, yes I do know that 70+ degrees F. and low humidity are best for drying and that is what environment I put it in. I even tried to use a hot air gun at distance to finish the surface as a test. No real change. December 28, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I love this stuff I have used the aerosol and brush versions of this finish on numberous furniture projects, both building and refinishing furniture. It is very tough. My projects have survived two teenage daughters with numerous friends. I prefer the aerosol if possible to get a smoother finish. Use numerous light coats instead of heavy coats. I tried applying it here in Wisconsin with the temperature in the 60's and I was sorry. I ended up applying it in the garage and carrying the item in the house to dry enough to get a coat. You want 70's and dry if possible. August 7, 2009
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not a Good Value on Medium to Large Objects The spray did not provide the coverage as advertised. Dried very quickly in the air even spraying at approx. 6" from object resulting in more of a powdery finish than a smooth one. This product may work well on an extremely small object with an intricate pattern where you are worried about applying too much of the regular painted on polyurethane. I would put a size limitation to only objects smaller than a small chair - meaning the spray is not a good value for the price you pay for the results / coverage you get on larger objects.
