My wife has a problem when it comes to furniture; if the piece doesn't weigh three times more than it should she's not interested in it.  Unfortunately, heavy things tend to be more difficult to move and as a result our newly refinished hardwood floor suffers.  Having just refinished the floor in a rich espresso, it looked great.  That was, until it was gouged by a loose metal rail leaving a inch long, quarter inch deep scratch right in the center of a small dressing room. Before calling the professionals I decided to research the steps to undertake a repair and though it was a bit intimidating I decided that I could try to save some money and give it a shot.  After a trip to Home Depot, where I purchased a combination of Minwax wood filler (, stain, and clear coat as well as a very fine sandpaper which I used to hand sand the area after applying the wood filler. Next came the stain, this stuff works magically.  After a good stir it went on smooth and--to my surprise--matched the rest of the floor perfectly.  Unfortunately I failed to take a before photo, but take my word for it--it was noticeable and aggravating. The picture below shows the area in question and with a top coat of satin poly, you can't even tell there was ever any damage.
