What soil do you recommend for a raised garden bed?

16'x 4'x 2' full sun for vegetables. Virgin bed. First 12" of depth are overturned sod
Asked by: Greg
A good soil for you to use in your Raised Bed would be Miracle-Gro Nature's Care Raised Bed Soil with Water Conserve. Just keep in mind that you will need to fill the bed half full with Scotts Topsoil then mix Miracle-Gro Nature's Care Raised Bed Soil with Water Conserve into the top 3 inches of your soil. If you have any questions or would like further assistance, please contact us at 877-220-3089 and one of our representatives would be glad to assist you.

Why are the measurements of the contents in spanish and not in English?

I'd like to know the amount in weight.. not in cu ft.. can't tell as it is not in English.. very annoying.
Asked by: 1010
The term cubic foot is an Imperial and US customary (non-metric) unit of volume. It is not a unit of weight. The bags are measured in volume so that it is easier to estimate the amount of bags required to cover an area at a particular depth. For instance, four 1 cubic foot bags of soil will cover a 24 square foot area to the depth of 2 inches deep; while it would take 6 bags to cover the same area at a depth of 3 inches deep.

1 cu. ft. Garden Soil for Flowers and Vegetables is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 380.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from This year Got my outdoor garden started used miracle grow like always. But this year it was different, not much fertilizer at all and it almost look like compost. Not like soil as always,it was stringy. My tomatoes seem good so far so maybe it's ok we'll see.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My plants like it I use Miracle Gro all purpose bag to mix with my soil when replanting or adding on top of already planted flowers and pots. You can see the difference in a couple of days. I will keep using this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not expect this from Miracle Grow! Extremely disappointed with this purchase. Bought 18 bags on sale and most of them sleeping in my garage, not sure what to do with them. Below are the complaints, a. Soil contains raw wood which is still not being rotten enough to be a compost. I also found few big pieces of wood. b. There are other materials found apart from some big pebble stones and wood chunks. Not sure if those are plastic. c. This is my biggest concern, when I water the soil, the water does seep inside and absorbed, but I see dry dusty soil just like one inch below the place I just watered. Even after soaking the soil, I saw spots of very dry soil underneath. I am very concerned with the tender plantation I have put on there. Please don't buy this rubbish!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bags of Mulch, not soil I bought 8 bags of what I thought would be Garden Soil. Upon opening the bags I discovered that they were incredibly mulch-like: they were full of uncomposted wood chips. Because I was impatient I used the mulch to fill my 6'x6' raised bed anyway, and then planted the plants I had in holes that I filled with home-produced compost thinking I could get away with that. Not so much. My plants all exhibit stunted growth and low flowering/fruit yield. The mulch is extremely compacted which is complicating soil drainage. I am incredibly disappointed, the bags did not contain rich, dark soil like I had wished.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from oops bad choice I thought Miracle Gro was a good brand name so I bought about 8 bags for my new planter box. A few days after planting we started noticing gnats and little winged critters all over the top of the soil. So I googled "gnats in garden bed" and found that Miracle Gro soil is contaminated, "Miracle-Gro Potting Soil and Fungus Gnat Infestations" was the title. The search result was the first one. Now I have to either dump it and start over or try to exterminate the problem. Will never buy Miracle gro again. Buyer beware.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from READ THE INGREDIENTS BEFORE YOU BUY THIS PRODUCT SHOULD NOT BE LISTED AS "GARDEN SOIL" THE INGREDIENTS DO NOT INCLUDE GARDEN OR SOIL IN IT'S DESCRIPTION OF WHAT IS IN THIS BAG. NUMBER 1 IN THE INSTRUCTIONS TELL YOU TO MIX WITH NATIVE SOIL. I LIST THIS AS AN AVERAGE VALUE BECAUSE IT IS A GREAT AMMENDMENT TO THE SOIL AND I ONLY PAID $2.00 FOR A BAG. SO IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR GARDEN SOIL FOR PLANTING YOUR VEGETABLES OR FLOWERS - THIS IS NOT FOR YOU

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made my garden come alive! We recently bought this house and the front yard had the typical "landscaping" that was boring and water intensive. When I removed my dead turf I discovered there was no soil underneath, only sand. So I bought more than 40 bags overall to make my small front yard into a garden that would grow a miniature landscape. I buy the smaller bags (1 cu. foot) because they are easier for me to haul around. The soil was just the right texture and richness, mixed beautifully with the sand, and created a nice dark backdrop for the young plants. In the few weeks I have been doing this transformation I have heard lots of nice comments from my new neighbors. Highly recommended for the texture, the quality of the soil, and ease of use.
