Do I need to mix it with other soil if I am using this for herbs and growing veggies in pots?

Do I need to mix it with other soil if I am using this for herbs and growing veggies in pots?
Asked by: Sabrina
Of course you can use this soil to amend a potting mix. The reason for that would be to take advantage of the properties of "garden soil," which is its higher density and loads of nutrients. It wouldn't be a bad idea if your herbs or plants want a "wetter" soil, but you can also achieve that with amendments of old coir hanging basket inserts that the birds have picked apart or with "soil moist"/polymer granules. As others have pointed out, using garden soil in a pot possibly could contribute to suffocating the roots of some tender herbs and plants, but a little grit or mini-pine bark mulch can completely alleviate that downside. Direct experience with that. Many recipes for making potting mix. Google it. This soil is very good for just about any purpose, but it is designed specifically for in-ground use or top dressing either plan or with other amendments. When you consider the cost, using it as an amendment makes complete sense.

Why is 50:50 mix required? What is result if 100% Garden Soil is used? Request Scotts respond Side-bar: If 50:50 garden soil-to-top soil mix is required, recommend Home Depot mention this fact prominently in offering page

If you look at the cost of a large cube of peat moss and mini-pine bark mulch or vermiculite or perlite, you'll realize you pay an awful lot for potting mix. This is excellent soil, and it can be the basis of homemade potting mix, which saves you money while it lowers Scotts revenue for potting mix. But it won't hurt the good corporation. It will help them meet the customer demand in a way that differs from the current program. Face it, microclimates call for different soil mixes. So making your own is a great hobby. Cathartic, too. Downright theraputic. Now, take it from someone who has grown many many different plants in Alabama and Florida, you won't go wrong using 100 percent of this stuff with some plants. Tomatoes can cut 10-foot roots through the Alabama clay and grow to monstrous heights. It doesn't care HOW dense the soil is. This soil is pansy soil to tomatoes. Green peppers can handle it at 100 percent, too. But many tender herbs need the air that Scotts talks about. Their roots are tender. Azaleas would love a mix of 80 percent Miracle Gro Garden Soil, 10 percent pine bark mulch and 10 percent old coffee grounds. Remember cost always when conducting business. And buying garden soil is business. No need to waste your resources if you don't have to.

What ratio of potting soil and compost with this would I use?

Asked by: Jenniffer
Jenniffer, the Miracle Gro Garden Soil for Flowers & Vegetables is meant to amend native soil when planting in the ground. There is no need to mix this with additional compost or potting soil.

2 cu. ft. Garden Soil for Flowers and Vegetables is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 570.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from does what it says. 2 cu. ft. Garden Soil for Flowers and Vegetables Dig a hole, plant a vegetable, and fill with miracle-gro garden soil. That is all you need to do in order to grow amazingly healthy and robust vegetables. This garden soil always gives my plants a head start and keeps them growing all season long. I have used this soil in my garden for the last 6 years and have only had positive results. Miracle Gro soil is normally more expensive then the other soil brands but the quality of the soil is well worth the price. I will never choose any other soil to plant my garden with, this is the best soil around. ProsEasy to Use, Effective, Good Directions, Quality

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I expected I have been gardening for years! But this is the first time I bought Miracle Grow garden soil. It was FULL of pieces of bark, plastic, twigs and junk! As for it actually helping the plants remains to been seen. if I had wanted all the "junk" in my veggie garden I would have just thrown in mulch! Will try something else next year for sure.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from mushrooms everywhere Not sure if this is improving the growth of my plants or anything, but the one thing that bothered me is once I put it in the raised beds mushrooms started popping up everywhere. At this point there are more mushrooms than plants, even though I get rid of them every day. Not sure if this is a plus for potting soil I don't know about...
