Minimum water pressure to function properly

I want to use a soaker type hose connected to a water collection barrel, which is elevated 3 feet above the garden's surface. The barrel stands about 3 feet high, so that the pressure when full is approximately 3 psi, and about 1.5 psi when empty. Bear in mind that normal potable water supplied by a municipality is between 40-60 psi. Does the rain barrel provide enough pressure for this hose to work? If not are there more porous types?

I look forward to your prompt and informed response.

Good question, because I'm considering doing the same thing. I read 10psi is what's needed for soaker hoses to work. I also read there are now specially designed soaker hoses for use with rain barrels. You could try their website www.swanhose.com

That's a Great Question Alan. I think it will work. I do not see this as a an ideal situation due to low pressure. Worse thing you could do is hook it up and see your results. Good luck, Hope this helped.

The stores don't seem to carry the Miracle Gro version of this hose which is 50'. Stores do carry the 100' Element SoakerPro System which appears to be the same hose made by the same manufacturer (Swan) just with different branding and double the length.

Because of the various factors that must be included in estimating the flow rate from a soaker hose, it's difficult to determine the amount of water you're supplying to your garden. A simple method of measuring water flow is to use a 5-gallon bucket and a watch. Place the entire coiled hose in the bucket, fill the bucket with water, place a mark at the top of the water line. Remove the hose. Now, measure how much water is left in the bucket. Let's say there is now four gallons left after removing the hose. Empty the bucket, replace the hose, turn on the water and start timing how long it takes for the water to reach the mark.
Apply this simple formula: (number of gallons) divided by number of seconds to reach the gallon mark X 60 = gallons per minute.
So, if your bucket indicates 4 gallons of water after removing the hose, and it takes 600 seconds (10 minutes) to refill the bucket up to the mark, multiply by 60 = 0.4 gallons per minute. Read Less

SoakerPRO Element 3/8 in. Dia x 50 ft. Advance Water Hose is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from PERFECT FOR LONG, NARROW GARDEN BED While I have an in-ground sprinkler system, one zone is a very long, narrow, bed that is up against my back fence and elevated (see photo). Using the in-ground system to water this zone means more water going on the fence than in the garden bed, so I decided to take a different approach with this soaker hose. I can lay this soaker hose the full length of the narrow, raised bed. It has easy connectors that can be used to block the end of the hose, or connect the garden hose, or connect other soaker hoses to make it longer. The hose releases an adequate amount of water, without wastage. A perfect solution for this zone in my yard.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just fine Works well. Nothing fancy.... Like the barbed to hose end connectors; easier than endless rummaging in hardware plumbing section... Am replacing one that is probably 10 years old and all beat up. Wish it was clearer what the range of output was likely to be; 1 gallon per minute? 2 gallons per minute at given pressure? My well is tender and I have to be careful not to run it too hard. Directions could be clearer about the simple physics that flow will be lower at the end of a hose run so it might be useful to arrange it in a different configurations depending on your application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effective and Efficient The Miracle Gro Soaker Pro Advanced 50’ hose works extremely well. Even though this hose is a smaller diameter, it can deliver more than an ample amount of water. Not only will this soaker hose save you time but it will also conserve water. The hose is pliable and easily maneuvered around your plants, however it is still strong enough to withstand the constant pressure associated with a soaker hose. The hose can easily be cut with a utility knife or household scissors to any desired length. The kit comes with fifty feet of hose, two end caps and two female caps, which allows you the ability to attach it to the hose or directly to the faucet. Finally, the hose packaging has a very helpful chart that can provide you with the proper watering times to achieve the depth at which you want the water to penetrate into the soil.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent watering system I just got this today and set up 20 feet to water a row of Little Blue Stem grasses I transplanted last week. I could tell right away that this was the system for me. I cut the size hose I needed and pushed on the attachments - one for the spigot and the other to terminate the hose. Then I turned on the water and the hose started to "sweat" immediately the entire length - so much easier than spending hours watering individual plants by moving the hose on a schedule. I can't wait to set up more of this hose this coming weekend. I haven't read all the instructions yet, but I can't imagine I would have to take this hose in for the winter. I hope all I have to do is disconnect it from the spigot and just leave it in place to use next year. If not, it's easy enough and lightweight enough to pick up. I would just have to label which section goes where. Also, with a black hose and black mulch in my flowerbeds, it virtually disappears.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work Bought the 75' hose but it can only get water to the first 30 foot of the hose. Also leaks from connectors. Waste of time and money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 50' Soaker Hose from Trusted Name in Gardening This 50' soaker hose comes with 2 male and 2 female ends which allows you to make 2 separate hoses. Simply cut to the length you need, slip on the ends and you are ready to go. I purchased a garden hose "Y" (splitter) so I could run both soaker hose sections at the same time with only one garden hose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product This product is easy to customize for your usage. You can only make 2 sets of hoses but for most that's all you need. What I did is add a male hose-end nipple to the plastic piece I attached to the hose so I can plug my female connector attached to my water hose up to each soaker and turn on my timer for set amount without having to unscrew anything. This works great in an area where I have 3 blackberry plants (10 foot of hose) that require more watering than my drought tolerant shrubs and plants on the other side of the yard (40 feet of hose). Easy to cut with scissors. Easy to install the hose-end connectors that hook to the hose and blocks one end. No leaks from my installation. Soaks as intended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than Flat hose This is a good quality round soaker hose that does a much better job at soaking than the flat type of hose that sprays more than drips. The Miracle Grow hose comes with two sets of plastic hose ends, enough for two hoses, that merely slip into the ends of the hose. If you want to create two soaker hoses, cut this one to length with scissors.
