Minimum water pressure to function properly

This question is from SoakerPRO Element 3/8 in. Dia x 50 ft. Advance Water Hose

I want to use a soaker type hose connected to a water collection barrel, which is elevated 3 feet above the garden's surface. The barrel stands about 3 feet high, so that the pressure when full is approximately 3 psi, and about 1.5 psi when empty. Bear in mind that normal potable water supplied by a municipality is between 40-60 psi. Does the rain barrel provide enough pressure for this hose to work? If not are there more porous types?

I look forward to your prompt and informed response.

Good question, because I'm considering doing the same thing. I read 10psi is what's needed for soaker hoses to work. I also read there are now specially designed soaker hoses for use with rain barrels. You could try their website www.swanhose.com

That's a Great Question Alan. I think it will work. I do not see this as a an ideal situation due to low pressure. Worse thing you could do is hook it up and see your results. Good luck, Hope this helped.

The stores don't seem to carry the Miracle Gro version of this hose which is 50'. Stores do carry the 100' Element SoakerPro System which appears to be the same hose made by the same manufacturer (Swan) just with different branding and double the length.

Because of the various factors that must be included in estimating the flow rate from a soaker hose, it's difficult to determine the amount of water you're supplying to your garden. A simple method of measuring water flow is to use a 5-gallon bucket and a watch. Place the entire coiled hose in the bucket, fill the bucket with water, place a mark at the top of the water line. Remove the hose. Now, measure how much water is left in the bucket. Let's say there is now four gallons left after removing the hose. Empty the bucket, replace the hose, turn on the water and start timing how long it takes for the water to reach the mark.
Apply this simple formula: (number of gallons) divided by number of seconds to reach the gallon mark X 60 = gallons per minute.
So, if your bucket indicates 4 gallons of water after removing the hose, and it takes 600 seconds (10 minutes) to refill the bucket up to the mark, multiply by 60 = 0.4 gallons per minute. Read Less

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 41 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Effective and Efficient The Miracle Gro Soaker Pro Advanced 50’ hose works extremely well. Even though this hose is a smaller diameter, it can deliver more than an ample amount of water. Not only will this soaker hose save you time but it will also conserve water. The hose is pliable and easily maneuvered around your plants, however it is still strong enough to withstand the constant pressure associated with a soaker hose. The hose can easily be cut with a utility knife or household scissors to any desired length. The kit comes with fifty feet of hose, two end caps and two female caps, which allows you the ability to attach it to the hose or directly to the faucet. Finally, the hose packaging has a very helpful chart that can provide you with the proper watering times to achieve the depth at which you want the water to penetrate into the soil. August 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by It broke in half! On the third time using this hose it snapped in two. My husband was able to take the plug off one end and put it on the broken end. So now I have a much shorter hose and it leaks. Poor quality control! And I can't make a warranty claim because I did not save my receipt. I thought this hose would last longer than 2 waterings! Do not buy this product, not worth the money. July 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome 50' water hose! Great miracle-gro soaker Pro advanced 50' in length hose is the perfect hose to water plants, trees or grass over long periods of time to obtain the long watering effect for absolute growth. The soaker pro is both steady and consistent but not overly aggressive to drown plants, and trees or grass. This would be the perfct fit for flower beds both big and small! July 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Color me Angry - Don't waste your money! If I could give this zero stars, I would! Going on the Miracle-Gro name and the 7 year warranty, I picked up one of these at my local big-box retailer for my vegetable garden. I carefully laid it out and hooked it up. Then I turned it on and OH NO - it leaks at the soaker hose side of the hose connection - between the coupler and the plastic connector sleeve protecting the soaker hose. NOT at the hose connection. Now I have to pull it up, trek back to the store and return it, and go find something that works properly. May 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Leaks This hose leaks so badly at the connection that it can't be used. May 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product By far the best soaker system I have ever used. I currently have 3 separate "systems" installed around my garden. The kit makes it very easy to customize the installation to suit the area you're working with. Each system I have set up seems to distribute water evenly throughout the entire length of the system. I even have mine set up on an automatic timer for truly-effortless watering! Would highly recommend this system May 25, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Functional, But Inlet Fitting Leaks A soaker hose is a good, economical way to water plants, and this Miracle-Gro hose does it well. The hose comes with push-on connectors. The inlet connector is a standard hose fitting with a flow restrictor washer. The outlet connector allows another section of hose to be added on. A threaded cap is provided if no more sections need to be added. The hose is easy to install if you follow the instructions and lay it out in the sun for about an hour to take the curl out of it. One criticism: the inlet fitting leaks. The restrictor washer would not seal to the end of my supply hose. I solved the problem by buying a standard hose washer, and placing it in front of the restrictor washer. I had to use the thinnest washer I could find, as the thicker washers did not leave enough threads for the hose to stay connected. Miracle-Gro could easily solve this problem by supplying an appropriate washer. June 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Basic Kit! This is a basic kit in that it comes with the soaker hose, 50', and a few fittings. I am using it in a vegetable garden with rows. So I divided it in two so I could lay out 25' rows. Works very well. Its easy to cut and add fittings to. I advise laying it in the sun for a while so it rolls out easier. Also I buried it just under the dirt. Figure it will not be in the direct sun that way and should last longer. May 6, 2016
